Looks like there was a glitch with my chip and Clevedon are going to include me in the results. Only wish I'd fiddled my time now. Probably the only way I'd have beaten Rob this year, but roll on the new year...

Club Kit....Thanks Jamie for the reminder. This has been discussed at the club committee and to overcome some of the objections about the vest, we now provide a racing vest and racing T shirt both in yellow club colours(not the blue training shirt). If you do not have either of the above please see me. Shorts can be either dark blue or black. No excuses now for not wearing club colours when competing as a member of Weston AC. Any questions please speak to me or send me an e mail.

I have a few items of clothing which can be returned to their owners, if I know who you are! Please email me with description of item, where you lost it and where you live. If I don't hear by early January they'll go to a charity shop.

We would like to thank everyone who helped make the Cracker a huge success yesterday. Without your support there would simply be no Christmas Cracker, there are so many people who worked extremely hard even when the pressure was on. Our special thanks go to the committee members who again delivered in all aspects and worked from the early hours until late on Sunday.

Finally we would like to thank North Somerset Council (Darren Mason), their contractors Birse Coastal and the Grand Pier owners. This time last week it looked as if we would not be able to use the beach as it was still a building site with no access. All of the above promised we would be able to proceed and delivered on all of their promises in time for Sundays race. All too frequently the council and large organisations are criticised but this weekend they really helped us all.

Rich - firstly you should know by now that you can rely on the Mercury for accurate reporting and clearly it was an innocent error mistaking me for the Welsh table tennis player who rose to Olympic standard in the 1920's. Little is known about my names sake other than he was born in Mertha tydfil, one of the17 children of Myfanwy and Geraint. In an attempt to better himself and earn some much needed money to help his parents... you see on a day trip to Port Talbot his poor Mam had taken fall on the Co- op escalator getting her boot lace caught, this then dragged her leg into the workings and she sadly lost it, a tragedy made worse by the fact that she had cycled down from the valleys and couldn't get herself home for days. Despite trying to return to work it became clear that working down the mines with one leg was never going to work. Any family would find difficult to recover in these circumstances yet Robert knew he had a talent and encouraged by 1920's Welsh national champion Jones the butcher he would practice day and night on the white marble slabs of Jones's shop until he made it into the Olympic squad. Sadly world titles and medals seemed to allude him yet for me its a honour to share his name. A little known story yet impressive that the Weston Mercury should believe the 1950's sporting legend, who would now be 108 is alive and in Weston donation money to charity..... a simple mistake we can forgive them for. Secondly it was a cold morning and both the club vest and shorts are beneath my suit.... im surprised you should ever doubt I leave the house without them on.

Mes Amis ,i have alarming news to report. Following further undercover work i have found out side effects one can experience from this immersion treatment. A nasty viral infection called Red eye ( train tunnel syndrome ). Early warning signals are a bloodshot eye , if untreated this infection can lead to Premature Baldness, impotentcy and Dementia. Apparently athletic types are not so susceptible but unathletic types are prone. Please if anyone knows anybody who could be at risk stop them now . Don't Die of Ignorance...

Aha ze big secret is out ! Claudine has been spotted visitng an address in Kewstoke, after much undercover work i have found out that she has total immersion treatment in a tub with someone known only as slackbladder . We know this slackbladder as the Cockney sparrow. Her trainig regime has been copied by local triathlete Go slow Colman and the results are plain to see. So anybody who is struggling with times and would like to boost performance get down to Kewstoke this Wednesday coming...

We have an exciting opportunity for someone to become a race director. Roger would like to hand over the Beacon Batch race to a fresh pair of hands and we are therefore looking for a replacement. We would like, if possible, to have someone pretty soon so that we can inform the fell runners association by the end of October. The club needs fresh faces and new ideas and these handovers are a natural evolution for the club. In volunteering you would get the help and support of Roger and I believe may well have a keen assistant, if required! Please drop me an e-mail if your interested in directing a race and supporting your club.

Shock news , Pete Clark using same coach as go slow Colman. Not sure Ger has come to terms with the fact that you were crawling on all fours at one point. Good effort all the same ,gives me a chance of closing the gap on prom race .

Cheers for the mention Brian. It was Victor's fault - he put the crazy notion into my head and I just couldn't shake it out! Sorry for causing some of the other runners concern thinking that I must be injured or something as I was going so slow and even walking in parts, and thanks for their support. Won't be trying that again. Quiet Victor.

MENDIP MUDDLE
Many thanks to everyone who has volunteered to assist with the organisation of the Mendip Muddle. Please click the links below for the tasks assigned to each helper and a course map with marshal positions. Your assistance is greatly appreciated and we couldn't put on this race without you. I will be down at Hutton Moor tonight if anyone has any questions. Please note that we are using a different room for the race number pickup/last minute entries/memento collection this year (the wooden terrapin at the rear of the centre). This provides us with far more room and should result in less congestion.

I am sure those planning on doing the Brent Knoll race will be delighted to learn that the top stile on the Knoll (just before you do the circuit of the top) has been replaced so it is as safe as houses. There is even a nice little gate for dogs to get under. AND I have cut the brambles at the top of that bit of the path AND some of the steps have been replaced. It's wonderful! However, tne NT is not responsible for the dodgy stile at the top of the orchard which is probably as bad as it ever was.

Standing on the sidelines hurling abuse does not constitute marshalling! I feel 3 points is rather excesive and not earned! I think i would have probably had more support from Victor and the Goofey one!

There's a very good chance that the Womens A team will beat the Mens A Team in the Prom Series. Maybe bald Rich Coleman could be your saviour.

Claudine; I hope youre not suggesting there was some skullduggery afoot on saturday night? I'm sure Victor will be gloating about his victory for months to come, probably taking all the credit as well from the real brains of the team Geraldine. But they did win fair 7 square. I thought I gave all the other teams a chance with the Steve Ovett connection 10 point bonus. I thought no one would have a clue on that! How wrong I was. I admit I did give the odd cryptic clue to the kids team though. Maybe next time I'll get you up to do the 4 opposite questions. Still I'm glad you enjoyed it, Good luck on sunday in the Bristol half, give those Kenyans a run for their money.

Dear webmaster. Please could we have a new link called 'injury clinic', or something similar? Where members can recomend qualified profesionals that have done a fantastic job at healing sports injuries. I have been to see Alison Huxtable and her team at the High Grove Clinic (osteopaths),and a physio at the Birdwell clinic in Long Ashton this year, and would like to recomend them both. It's always a bit hard trying to find a good injury clinic, and a recomendation really goes a long way. Thank you. Si.

Hard to believe, as thought he hit it a few years ago but young Matt is hitting his big 30 on August 17th and we thought as he has done so much for the club it would be nice to take him for a few drinks on Friday 15th August. I know thats a busy week on the social calendar but if as many as possible could come it would be great (as he doesnt have many friends). Burnham 5K; Just to let those who may've liked to have done the Burnham 5K last night but opted for the social run instead know what it was like incase you fancy the next one - The course is 3 reps of a circular, virtually flat lap, well marshalled with drinks at the finish. Although highly placed, myself and the other WAC runners I spoke to afterwards ran a slower pace than we do in the Prom series - perhaps due to the heat. We all appeared to have enjoyed it though and are looking forward to the next! Well done to Chris (3rd man) and Fran (first lady).

Its for members and partners with a BBq after the run. For all those that have never been, it is a 6 mile run (approx) on the East Brent footpaths. The trail is laid with flour for you to follow with several false trails so the fast boys can get a bit more exercise finding the right trail, which helps to keep the group together, there are also some regrouping points. Re recent COACHING SESSIONS with Tim Pollard; Thanks very much Tim for the recent sessions. The sessions were presented in an informal and tailored way and each activity was made to be fun and informative with scientific refence but in a practical, down-to-earth method. To improve our running we may need to run more often, further or harder, but as well as that, changing how we actually run and knowing what kind of preparations, recoveries and diet will aid our running is equally as important, so having an input from somebody with that kind of knowledge is invaluable and I'm greatful to Tim for sharing his. If there are any future opportunities for Weston AC members to take advantage of Tim's sessions (free or otherwise), then I highly reccomend them!

Hi Dave, although Weston AC are affiliated to the BTA we do not have individual member affiliation. Therefore we benefit from there insurace cover but you dont get any reduction on your entry fee. Its a bit like the current situation with England Athletics you are only eligable for the discount if you have paid the individual affiliation fee. Hope that makes sense.

I too would echo Kira's and Neale's comments. I will even offer to do the first leg again as it may be a bit easier having some idea where you are going. It would be good to get 2 or 3 teams like a number of the other clubs had done, that way you can support each other at the start and end and also arrange transport between you. I was very grateful of a lift from the 2 Avon Valley runners back to the start. They had got up at 3:45 to travel from Trowbridge. Who said runners aren't mad.

Yes yet another PB from Claudine last night and she has now started winning prizes!! Also well done to Pam who had another first v50 although not recognised on the night as they had her in another catagory. Well done also to all you others that also had pbs, perhaps i might get one some day! Chantelle Run is from Paul Snellings House, you need to get onto the road that goes past the Webbington (if its on your right) then keep along that road for about 1/2 mile and look out for a sharp right turn Rackley Lane you should then see us along that road.

I wish to add my comments about our Master Baker this week. Of the three offerings presented by the Cockney Birds Nest, only one was a true cake. The banana cake was excellent and can attract only praise. Offering number two was shortbread, which is not exactly a true cake....it falls into the same category as the Pam Withers Cookies which, as we all know, provoked outrage last year from the likes of Phil O'Pastry (RIP) and spawned running commentaries of cakes for the rest of the season (yawn). Which brings us to offering number three......FUDGE! This is a sweet...confectinery....candy! The only way it could pass as a cake would be if it was still in the freezer in its cube like state. As it was, it had melted at room temperature into the dangerous substance as described by our Chairman. We must not, however, discourage the Sparrow from producing "cake" offerings on an annual basis. After all, what the heck would we all talk about for the rest of the year (apart from Rachael's King Alfred's Torment charcoal brickettes)? So I ask you all to embrace our Cockney Sparrow when you see her next. Thank her for her efforts and wish her better luck for next year!

Fudge it!

Posted : 11:26
Lovely banana cake Ginnie.. You must pass on my thanks.

As for the other, what skills you must have to create such a culinary masterpiece. Never before have we seen such a substance which can take on so many different forms. I mean a cake that transforms literary before your eyes, and furthermore should there be any left over, you can always use it to attaching fixtures back onto the wall.

From Birds Nest to Birds Mess... wonderful.

If anyone is thinking of coming into Weston today DONT!!. The Boulevard has been sealed off following a terror alert. It would appear that at about 9.15 a suspicious and dangerous package was delivered to Morgans Estate Agents..... A brave member of staff opened it but tragically passed away shortly after being exposed to the substance. Disposal experts were called to the premises and said that they had never seen such a horrific for of terror and they will use all recourses to hunt down the culprit and make sure they never strike again.....The substance has now been removed but the clean up operation may take some time.

Minehead Running Club have a run on the 27th July called "Exmoor Sea View 17" which is a nice cross country across Exmoor. It costs just 6.00 which is a bargain. You just need to get to Minehead where a bus takes you to the start and you just have to get back to your car where there are showers and a big spread they lay on. It is more of a good old Sunday run than a race, in beautiful countryside and breathtaking views. I've almost persuaded Pam to do it but thought it might be a good day out if a group of us went. I can bring entry forms on Thursday if anyone is interested or you can go to www.mineheadrunningclub.com and download one yourself.

Cotswold Relay (It all seemed like such a good idea 2 weeks ago!) Numbers have dwindled due to people dropping out or issues with navigation. We have sufficient numbers for a mixed team (minimum 3 women required), however, we also have a lot of people who have expressed an interest but havn't definitly committed, so we could have a Vet men and a Mixed team. These are the people who have definitly committed: Kira, Nick, Malcolm, Steve B, Sara S (Stage 3), Neil, Gerry K, Fran/Dean, Adrian N (Stage 7), Rich Coleman. These are the people who have expressed an interest but havn't committed one way or the other as yet: Rachel, Sam G, Pam, Chris D, Brian (Stage 4), Annette, Jim Wotton, Chris D, Rich Churchill. **** Please could you have a look at Cotswoldwayrelay.co.uk and let us know if you want to do it and if so your preferred stage. We will then give the outcome and name the team by Sunday evening. Once we have sorted this, Gerry King has said he is happy to help sort out the logistics based on previous experience.

RACE CANCELLATION - The athletics world was in shock yesterday upon learning that the King Alfred's Torment race would need to be cancelled this year as the baker responsible for the race mementoes was unlikely to be providing her usual burnt offerings. One race marshall was quoted as saying "What's the point? No burnt carbonised flap jacks, no race! Simple as that!". Another race marshall was heard to say "Moist lemon drizzle cake just doesn't cut the mustard". In order to avoid disappointment to the tens of runners entered into the event, race organisers were looking to substitute the burnt cakes with lumps of coal as they are sure nobody would notice the difference.

Good point Claudine... infact didn't even come into the pub for a slice before heading home... giving Gerry the oppertunity of doing her hamster impersonation all night (stuffed cheeks with cake) before taking MORE home for Neale. Or was it eaten in the car on journey?

I see we have both Anon and From: (I guess one and the same) keen to see the results of the prom on the web. Im sure Matt or Theresa will have these on as soon as possible. Im glad you see the web has changed since Matt took it over (or was this sarcasm). You may not be aware of how much time and effort hes put into re writing the entire web to enable the club to still have such a great medium. He is also developing many new and exciting updates which will be online in coming weeks one if which is to see who is putting messages on the board. Matt knows how much the committee and majority of members appreciate the work he has done and will, hopefully, continue to do for us all. If as an anonymous contributor you feel that you can assist Matt or the club to improve then please feel free to step forward and be counted as we always will appreciate constructive comments. Matt and Teresa keep up your excellent work and thank you both.

A runner from Northumberland Fell Runners is looking for a team mate (partner) for the Lowe Alpine Mountain Marathon on the weekend of the 7th June (http://www.lamm.co.uk/). His intended partner is injured. I am not sure which class he has entered but that can be changed on the day anyway so don't be put off by that. He is not an exceptionally fast runner (age 45+) so if you are then you may need to curtail your speed, otherwise he will happily slow down for you. He is a good navigator, so if that isn't your strength then he will cover that aspect. He is also a doctor so you'll be in good hands if you get injured! If this interests you then get in touch with Will Horsley (wjvh@btinternet.com) at Elvet Striders (my other club) and he'll forward your contact details etc. (I'm doing it with my younger daughter - Liz)

Hello all, I hope that someone can maybe explain if there is a speedy recovery for my suffering!? A couple of months ago I noticed quite sharp pains in the side of my left knee whilst running off road, however after stopping running for a bit I had no more problems when running again. It then reoccured again and after rest from running was fine. I then has these sharp needle pains again in the side of my knee when I was running the Taunton 1/2 marathon (2 weeks ago) after 2 miles and after 6 it was really hurting - like stabbing pains. Stupidly I didn't stop and finished the race in pain. Ever since then I have had problems walking without pain. I can now walk slowly about 100 yards without too much pain after which it just gets worse. Any advice on what it could be or tips on how to speed recovery would be gratefully received. Thanks Sally

Neil, I meant to tell you last night but we could both harldy breath after the lovely prom race - I've pretty much finalised a route for social run starting from the Sidcot Arms, it's a loop encompassing some nice views, woodlan paths and only one nasty-ish hill and decent. It should last about an hour or so but I'll go out with the Garmin next week to make sure. Cheers.

RACE FOR LIFE. Sunday 11th MAY 2008 For those of you unfamiliar with this race we, as a club, are asked to organise the route for this race. We need assistance with setting up the course and marshals for the event. Entries have closed and we understand there are 4000 entrants so if your blood pressure can stand the sight of 4000 women on the move please contact me. We do need as many volunteers as possible. Set up team 8o'clock north end of Tropicana with marshals briefing at 10o'clock same place. Thanks Roger.

This is aimed at people training for marathons. They have done this in combination with the charity CLIC Sargent. It is open to people who already have a place (but you need to ring Running High on 01225 422255 to register interest) and if you haven't already got a place there are a few extra places through CLIC for which you have to get some sponsorship (tel: 0845 602 4770 or email: run@clicsargent.org.uk.). I've asked Malcolm to put a notice about this on the WAC notice board at Hutton Moor.

All credit to Matt W for getting the website working. The necessary change to a new server caused a lot of unforeseen problems and Matt has sorted them out. We'll aim to keep things running smoothly from now on!

First time I've looked at a computer, nice to see we are on air again, many thanks to Neile & Gerry for a great evening @ Beachlands. I've seen Jayne down in Te Anau whose still running well & sends regards to all. Fantastic view over lake watching the aircraft coming into Queenstown airport between the mountains, plus the jetboats going to the gorges and the white water rivers while having our breakfast! It's good here.We will try to come back for the March PROM,if we tear ourselves away!!
