We are still short of 4 or 5 marshals for the Hangover 10k on Sunday. If you're free and can spare a couple of hours, come and clear your head by the sea. Please drop me or Jim Wotton a line if you, your friends or your family can help that morning.

Thank you to everybody who came out tonight to help make the mile and 5 mile run such as success again. We had 310 finish the main race which I am sure must be a record for December which is always our smallest field of the year. No more races to organise now for at least ... 10 days. Thanks in advance to those who are going to come and help on New Years Day.

Hi Colin. Thanks for your kind comment about our "great race" the Christmas Cracker. Our race licence for the Cracker requires us to post results on a Gun to Chip time basis. This is common to most races including those arranged by your own club. We only post the chip to chip times for the benefit of individual runners. You can of course easily check the times of those runners in your category. Glad you enjoyed the race. Kind regards. Malcolm Gammon Race Director Christmas Cracker.

Help request Hangover 10K New Years day      As many you will know, together with many of the other roles that I currently fill, I am also the race director for the Hangover 10K that takes place at 11:00am in Kewstoke from the Village Hall on New Years Day. This race has a limit of 250 but still needs quite an army of people to help put it on. Many people come and help every year but the problem is always getting people to confirm that they are coming so that I can get some sleep the nights before. After this year Martin Hurcombe is going to take on the role of race director and James Wotton has offered to be my chief marshal chaser so if you want to avoid having them on your case it would be great if you could drop me a mail at the address above confirming that you can help.

Hi, I wonder if you could present the recent Christmas Cracker results in Chip Time order rather than total time? You are not making the most of the chip data if you include the irrelevant time to cross the start and I can't easily see how I did against peers. Thanks for an otherwise great event.

As always I am moved by the commitment and support we get from all the club members and friends. Without your support and commitment there would be no race. Can I say a special thank you to those members involved in managing the two medical cases out on the course. The situations were managed in a very professional and quick way and no doubt had an impact on the outcome. Well done everyone you can be very proud of what you achieved today. Thank you. Hi John H,
Thanks for doing the results so quickly. I am sorry I forgot you are not on facebook. The current results for most of our people are gun times not chip times. Mine for some reason shows both and for instance I have a difference of 25 secs. Most of the ladies were behind me at the start so most will have quite a change to be made when the results are corrected in a few days time.

I will let you know when complete.

The race starts at 9am, so we are going to do the photo at 8.40am on the prom just to the north side of the pier (between the pier and the Winter Gardens).

Spooky Run
Chadders we do need some help in the kitchen and hall whilst we are out running so if you have somebody who wants to come that would be fine. (depending on age) they could go for a quick wander round the village (to do a bit of spooking) then help out in the hall.
Gary
We are currently planning 3 routes with 2 groups doing the first and second route.
Colin/John will be taking one group on 5/6 route about 3.5 miles mainly road
There will be 2 groups doing the 3/4/5 route about 5 miles - I ran it this afternoon and it will be fine for road shoes
1 possibly 2 groups for 1/2/3 route they will do about 6 miles mainly off road and a bit hilly so off-road shoes probably best if you have them

Hi Fran,
We currently have 6 groups. Vanessa has been injured for quite a few months but is now back to fitness and she will be taking group 4 again from now on. Group 4 will be the slowest of the groups running the whole route (mostly about 8.5 miles) and I am sure that it will be at a suitable pace for you to start again. This week there are no led groups from HM as it is a club social night run from Bleadon Village Hall. At least one bit of spooky Halloween fancy dress is mandatory if you wish to join us. There will be a number of groups from about 3.5 miles upwards and pasties afterwards.

HI Lorna,

The club usually gets a couple of places which get drawn during the Christmas social run. The criteria to be included into the draw is that you have to have been a member since 2015 (I.e. you will have gone through one renewal process, you must also have paid the optional England Athletics Affiliation Fee on your membership & finaly you must have proof that you entered the ballot ie your rejection magazine or e-mail. If you qualify you need to let Jim Wotton know.

Hi All,
Our first specifically targeted 10k training programme concluded with the races at Clevedon on the 14th June and Nailsea on the 24th June last Friday. Congratulations to everybody who ran and whether you achieved a p.b. on the night or not I am sure that your running will have benefited from taking part in the 10k course and thanks to Jason and Rob for organising and giving up their time.

Following the conclusion and listening to your feedback and requests we have decided to run a second programme this summer which will be aimed at half marathon training with a target race of Bristol on the 25/9 or Burnham on the 2/10 this year.

Jason and Rob will be supported by Carol O'Leary and me and we intend to continue with the focused sessions on Tuesday and Saturday mornings. As the most important single element will be developing your endurance (distance) we will also be strongly suggesting that you attend Thursday club nights and run with whichever group you currently do. Running 3 times a week is probably the minimum that you need to be able to commit to enable you to complete the half comfortably following the 12 week programme which will start w/c 4/7 with the 5k Handicap on Tuesday 5th July.

The programme will be aimed at people currently running in groups 3 to 5 and our plan will be to undertake the drills, int/reps, lactate/tempo and hill sessions on Tuesday nights and the increasing distance run on Saturday mornings. As we get further into the programme you will be running on Saturday mornings in smaller groups distances of 11/12 or further miles. So if we start at 8:00am depending on your pace you will not be finishing some of these in under 2 hours. If time is difficult for you on Saturday then perhaps you could start earlier and complete some miles and then join the group for the remainder and finish when you need to. We understand that you may not be able to make every session and we will be able to advise beforehand what you should try and do later on Saturday or Sunday or Monday by yourself if you wish. Being able to keep up with the progressive increase in mileage is an important element though. Having said that if you are able to complete most of the sessions over the 12 week period I am sure that you will all be capable of completing a half.

I know a number of people who took part in the 10k programme are keen to be involved but this new programme is open to all club members normally running in groups 3 to 5. As mentioned above we intend to start the new group from w/c 4/7 with the suggestion that you run the handicap on Tuesday with the first distance run on Saturday 7th July so please can you drop me a mail as soon as possible to confirm your interest. Numbers will be limited to 20 so please act quickly if you wish to be involved.

Jim Wotton

It is with great sadness that I pass on news of the death of Ray Chell yesterday. Ray was one of our oldest serving club members and an inspiration to us all still running into his eighties, I saw him out only a few weeks ago.
I am told he was in good health and working on his allotment when at this stage it is presumed that he suffered a heart attack. Despite the determined efforts of the emergency services they were unable to revive him.

We have been told by parkrun go for a 'soft launch' in order for us to get used to running our event. As much as we would like to see lots of children more importantly we would love to hear from any volunteers. All you do is go to the roster page on our Weston junior park run webpage and send us an email whenever you fancy.

401 Challenge - run 374 Thurs 8th Sept
Not sure how many of you are following the incredible progress Ben is making but today he ran marathon 257. He is coming back to Weston 8th Sept to run his 374th with us.
If you have followed his blog you will know that he has had some really large turnouts to run with him and to keep him going as it gets tougher. Looks like he had about 50 join him today. Ian and I would like to try and get a really good club support for him so please put the date in your diary and perhaps book a day off to join us if you can.

Another successful prom series. Well done to all the runners who competed in tonight's race and all the other races in this series. Congratulations to those who won category or team prizes. Good to see so many going to WAC members.
As always we are indebted to all those members and friends who turn out to help each month in good and bad weather, without you these races would not happen. Special thanks to the prom organising team who work hard each month in race HQ and outside to provide a great race.
Thanks also to Rob for putting on another great junior race series, something we can all be very proud to be involved with.
Looking forward to the next series!

The training everybody is doing must be working as there were so many pb's.
First home with a new pb was Debbie Vowles followed by Stefania Merrifield and Matt Allsworth all with over a minute off their previous pb.
Quickest run of the night (and he said he was taking it easy before tomorrow night) was Kieron in 17.05

Next Thursday is the first of the TACH races(Town and Country Harriers)and the following Thursday (12/5) is the May and last of the series Prom races.
So the next social that Paul Snelling is planning is on the 19/5 probably from the Commodore in Kewstoke. Hopefully the weather may be a little warmer by then and we will try to organise a bit of food and cakes.

IMPORTANT INFO for anyone coming to tomorrow evening's (Thursday) first summer (?) social run from the Dolphin, Uphill.

We will be meeting at 6.55pm for a 7pm in the car park on the opposite side of the road from the Dolphin about 50 metres towards the boat yard. The pub car park is very small so please DO NOT PARK IN THE DOLPHIN CAR PARK but in the roadside village car park opposite, in the boat yard or on the road between the pub and the boat yard or towards the beach.

Remember there will be no led groups from Hutton Moor tomorrow night.

Hi all

Just wanted to say that whilst it was a last minute entry, I also completed the London Marathon yesterday. It wasn't a good time as I had very little time to train prior to it and so managed it in 4:45. Hoping to get a place earlier next year (hopefully through WAC this time) so that I actually have time to train!

Well done everyone for your amazing efforts, it was an incredible day, so well organised and the support was better than any race I have ever done!!

Massive thanks to all those out supporting in London yesterday, sorry if i didn't spot you or respond, especially in the last 5 miles or so, i wasn't in the best of places!! So many amazing achievements, not just in London but across Europe, super proud WAC member here.

I may be wrong but a performance elsewhere may have been missed - there were a lot of posts yesterday - Chris McMillan's 3rd place, in a top quality field at Pensford 10km, shouldn't be overlooked.

Yes John. Convention is, I put runners in finish order, and where a female runner is in top three, they get mention ahead - as Niki did at a race recently.

It's just the convention, and is absolutely not intended to diminish the efforts of any of our female runners. Like I'd do that!

The important thing is that people's achievements get mentioned and not what order they get mentioned in, so where the information is available at the time I write the reports (early Sunday evening pretty much every week) I will mention our top three men and women, age category winners, and course or distance PBs (where I can).

Championship races always get covered, and if it's a quiet week on the championship front, I'll pick up others, including triathlons.

Interested to hear views of female runners too on this.

A couple of people have mentioned issues with the online membership system however you are not giving us enough information to go on to help resolve the issue. A couple of pointers:

1 - Don't get confused between the password you use for the Weston AC site and the Regonline.ActiveEurope Online Membership system; they are separate and distinct systems.
2 - Select the "Start a new registration" option if you are getting password issues.
3 - If using a tablet/mobile phone try using a normal laptop or desktop device instead.

It's that time of year! The club now has 353 members & each renewal & EA affiliation needs to be manually processed which is an enourmous administrative task. Please assist me by renewing your membership promptly. If your England Athletics affiliation isn't renewed by 30 June, EA will automatically lapse your affiliation. This means you will not be able to run as a WAC athlete in UKA races & benefit from the £2 discount, or collect championship points (I keep a record of who has paid!). It also creates more admin work to reinstate the affiliation. Please renew by 31 May to give me enough time to process your payment.
So let the moths out of your wallet & pay up! Many thanks, Niki

Barry, new clocks were agreed at the last committee meeting held in January, unfortunately like everything else technology has moved on so fast its quite a timely process trawling through everything out there to see what is best to suit our needs, but it is in hand. We are very aware on the committee how time consuming it is for poor Mark to sort out issues when things go wrong, we all go home to bed whilst he has hours of trawling through the video & bits of paper! If ever there was an advert for joining this club then I would skip the usual part about Exercise and fitness and go straight to the section listed as "social", as one miserable unsociable sort as myself has found so many quality friends Big ones, little ones, young ones ,old ones, odd ones and even girls. Disappointed not to get a place in the Snowden Marathon?
How about the Beachy Head Marathon on Saturday 29th October?

The Eastbourne Beachy Head Marathon is one the biggest off-road marathons in the UK. Formerly known as the Seven Sisters Marathon, it is popular for its scenic and challenging route through the South Downs National Park countryside. Great for runners, joggers or walkers looking to get fit. See the visiteastbourne web site for more details. Entries are now open (see active.com). Entry costs increase after 1st April. It gives plenty of time to sort out a training schedule.

Hi Kieron,
Both of the Bristol races are in the 2016 championship. Both were very well supported last year and I finalised races before we knew of the change to the Great Run series. There are 7 other halfs and 6 other 10K's and you only need to do 2 of each. Clevedon will be the 10K grand prix and Bristol the half grand prix. You can enter the Weston half for half price (£13.75) if you do it this weekend with the code BLUEMONDAY. I would do it quick in case he decides to limit the number he allows at that price.
We can review Bristol inclusion for next year when we see what difference the cost makes to members interest

Kieron. The deadline for me to obtain the discount code is 4th April for the 10k, the code then must be redeemed by the 2nd May.
For the half the deadline to obtain the code is the 15th Aug, the code must be redeemed by the 12th Sept.
As far as I am aware both races are in this years championship.
Jim could advise further.

Firstly - thank you Julia for organising group entry yet again.

Secondly - given the ever increasing cost of these races (The half is almost £10 more than last year) is it likely these will both be on the club championship race calendar this year?

Thirdly - Julia -What is the timescale for confirmation of entry on these 2 races?

Hi Jim

I have just started a position based at Bath FE College teaching Business Admin, HR and ICT. Part of my remit is to help students set up an event. One group is planning a Colour Run which I am helping them with (for 250 people with a local sports facility under Bath FE being the HQ). I asked the students if it would he helpful having someone speak with them about arranging such an event, and they said it would. Would you or someone else within the Club be able to give a talk on this (arranging a run as a charity event) and give some examples of problems encountered. There would be expenses available - petrol/train fare/time? I have the Group (AAT Yr 1) from 9 am to 11.10 am on Monday mornings. They are planning their run to take place in a couple of months. They are planning it to occur on a Bank Holiday Monday which I don't think is a good idea but....! Can you let me know possibility or refer on to anyone else who may be able to help? Many thanks.

Julia, the Riverbank Rollick has been classed as a Multi Long Off Road for the Championship. It does not have any bearing on the PBs. I can only go by the list Jim gives me for the Championship Races, so he must agree that change. The event itself is now a 9 miler and will allow PBs to be entered correctly only. This all needs clarification by Jim himself, I guess.

Just for general info I have asked the new organisers of the Bristol 10k and the Bristol half what the position is on a group discount for each/either race. They have been looking into it for two weeks, but I should have an answer by this Wednesday.
The results for the rollick need to be removed and re-input in order to move across to the 2016 9 mile 'my results' and pb's.
I can do this later, unless you get chance to mark.

For those who enquirer about our last cycle mechanics workshop but couldn't get on as it was full, please see the blurb below taken from the Sole Cycling Facebook page...feel free to contact me to book or with any questions.
Great for those triathletes in the club, save yourself a fortune and never be caught short the night before a race again!
We are taking bookings for another of our excellent 'Introduction to Home Cycle Mechanics' course.
Along with the rather excellent Cytech level 3 qualified head mechanic this course will be run at the Independent Bike Company's headquarters in WsM town centre, with a fully Cytech accredited workshop and 2 instructors.
The course will cover the basics of puncture repair, brake adjustment, cable replacement, gear tuning, bearing replacement and wheel truing at the pace of attendees.
The course is open to riders of all ages and has just 6 places to ensure plenty of real practice time, working on real bikes, in a real working shop.
The course will run for 6 hours, over 3 weeks, 2 hours per week.
27th Jan
3rd Feb
10th Feb
6-8pm
The course costs £50 per rider, and includes 6 hours of 1:3 guided learning and tea/coffee as well as discounted servicing and tools for those wishing to buy the tools needed for a home tool kit.
Please let me know if you would like to book, and share with anyone you think may be interested

Thanks to the web elves for resolving the PB issue from Clevedon Boxing Day race. Alas I wasn't able to include details of PB achievements in the Boxing Day race report, so apologies for that.

Thanks to everybody who came down last night we had over 70 runners. First home was Paul Baker and quickest run of the night was by Kieron in 17.21.
Most of the new people are now registered on my sheets and you will all have a better idea of the new course so it should be a bit less hectic in Feb. We intend to move the start 10 yards or so towards the Trop so that it avoids the u-turn on top of the metal furniture on the floor which got very wet and slippy

Thanks Mark and thank you to Sara W for getting to the bottom of the anomalies. I have tested and if I take the results out and re-input everything will be correct. I will do that tomorrow I expect.

Clevedon Boxing Day Race has also been amended to reflect a '4 miler' as requested by club runners. This should allow for correct PBs to be entered for individuals.

Could anyone who has one of the clubs perpetual trophies please return them to me ASAP as I would like to get the engraving for this year started.
Tomorrow night at the handicap would be good as my car will be on the seafront

For possible interest for those running the Rollick. I can confirm the course is well prepared with mud and water. The stretch of footpath alongside the golf course might well be a little slippery on the day of the race!

Hi Paula. My kids have helped with marshalling for years and enjoy it (although I've not managed to convince any of them to run). As long as your sun remains with you under your supervision, I don't think anyone at the club will mind. And the extra support is always appreciated.

I struggle to come to training and Marshall due to child care as single patent. But enjoy being part of the club. Can you bring children with you if marshalling. My son is 9 years old? Did not know the way it works.

One last thought. We are a very successful club and I, like many others, do what I can to help to make it that way. But it is never a chore because I love running and get great satisfaction in seeing others enjoying it too. Here's to many more years of success.

Thank you to everybody who came and helped make today possible in whatever role you took and thank you to those who ran the race but helped before and/or after.
It was a bit busy traffic wise and we will need to look at that again for next year but all of the runners seemed to enjoy the race and with the contribution from the kitchen we should have raised £1500 for the charity.
From a spectators point of view seeing a new course record of 30.50 was a bit special so don't worry too much if you got lapped.
