Coaching Principles
During the course of the club's history Weston Athletic Club has changed from a mixture of juniors and adults competing in track and field events, cross-country and road racing to what we have today.Today the club membership consists of adults aged from sixteen to seventy plus, of mixed ability and who want to train and compete in events ranging from 5000M to full marathon road events, as well as challenging off-road multi-terrain races.
Members have different aspirations and goals and the training is structured around the core elements of speed work via interval and fartlek sessions, stamina and strength work via hill and club circuits and the longer, slower endurance training usually undertaken at weekends.
Some members are involved in training for duathlon (run, bike, run) and triathlon (swim, bike, run) and use the club as the base for their training. The elements of swimming and cycling are developed within the club amongst an experienced group of members who are able to give advice and guidance.
Training is structured to allow for both mixed ability group sessions whilst others are planned around equal ability groups. All active members are able to develop their running standard at the pace they decide upon; individuals can aim as high or as low as they wish but above all, can enjoy and benefit from their endeavours.
Individuals who want to train for specific distance e.g. a full marathon can seek individual training plans and guidance from the team of experienced coaches.
The underlying philosophy of the club is to provide a platform by which members can be part of a like-minded group of individuals with the principal aims of remaining healthy and achieving some running goals that others may aspire to.
The coaching team will provide a safe and structured environment during the normal club training schedule for all members. They will support and guide members to develop their running ability and will provide individual guidance when it is required.
