Press Release - Couch to Cracker in ten weeks

31/08/2015 19:54:50

Weston Athletic Club will be organising a 10k training programme this autumn in the runup to its Christmas Cracker race to help runners prepare for the event. The course is designed by the club to help people progress from not being able to run at all to being able to run 10k in just ten weeks.

Jim Wotton from the club organises the programme: “Last year we helped 50 runners, many of whom had never run before, and some who were lapsed runners, to develop their confidence, fitness and technique with the goal of running the Christmas Cracker at the end of the training programme. Most of them achieved this, and they’ve all carried on this year to enjoy running on a regular basis.

“I really would encourage anyone who would like to get into running, by working towards an achievable goal, to get in touch. It’s a great way to get started at the same time as a large number of other people who are all in exactly the same position. As well as preparing people physically, we’ll also give people advice on pre-race nutrition, hydration and what kit to wear when running.”

The Christmas Cracker training programme will begin on Monday September 28 with sessions every Monday evening at 7pm, and optional sessions every Saturday at 8am. A charge of £30 will be made at the beginning of the course and all the profits will go to Weston Hospicecare. All the coaches and leaders from the club give their time freely.

Entry for the race is available at www.westonac.co.uk/christmascracker and anyone wanting to sign-up or find out more about the pre-race training programme should contact Jim Wotton by email at jim.wotton@westonac.co.uk or by phone on 01934 814 208.

The 401 Challenge

31/08/2015 09:53:19

We are supporting Ben Smith, who is trying to run 401 marathons in 401 days, and he will be doing his 4th run in Weston on Friday the 4th Sept on a course that we have provided for him. If you are around it would be great if we could provide some company for him. We have been told he intends to run at about 5 hr pace. He will be starting from the Grand Pier at 10:00 am - Ian and I will be there from 9:30. He will be doing a loop of Sand Bay and then coming back to the pier at about half way when I and hopefully a few others will accompany him past the Anchor, Loxton, Christon, Hutton and then back via Uphill to the seafront. If anybody would like to help him with the first or second parts that would be great or if Simon wants to go the whole way even better. If you wish to join us for the second part please be at the pier at 11:30am. Please can you let me/Ian know if you are able to help and intend to come along.

Mendip Muddle 2015 - Volunteers needed

20/08/2015 16:51:46

The annual Mendip Muddle off road race is taking place on Sunday 11th October. For those of you who don’t know the event it’s a 12.5 mile multi terrain race run from Charterhouse over the beautiful Mendips. We usually have about 300 runners. More details can be found on the race page.

The organisation and staging of this race relies on WAC members volunteering to help. We need people to help set the course on Saturday and then on Sunday we need marshals out on the course and assistance at race HQ with the start, finish, race number distribution and the clear up afterwards.

We’ll need about 35 volunteers. We have a regular core of members who help out with most of the WAC events, which is great, but I am very keen for new members and those that may not have been involved before to help as well. It is also possible to run the race and help out before or after.

Can you let me know if you are available to help on the day. You can either email or speak to me at Tuesday or Thursday sessions over the coming weeks. For those that don’t know me I’m the tall guy with long hair, 50ish.

Tony Hogg (Race Director Mendip Muddle)

Mendip Muddle 2015 - Early bird discount ends 31st August.

This year’s Mendip Muddle is being held of Sunday 11th October. If you want to get a discount off the standard entry fee enter before 31st August. For more details please have a look at the race page.

Entries have been open for some time and are filling up, so if you planning to run this year please get your entry in soon. Entries are available online at the Weston AC website or if you require a paper entry form I can either email one or send one in the post if you send your address.

Awards - For first male and first female and age categories. All abilities are welcome with the main award - i.e. a pair of shoes (provided by the club) awarded in a raffle for all finishers of the race/run/walk.
