Message for WAC members about this year’s Christmas Cracker

28/06/2016 09:45:13

Dear Weston AC members

Some of you might have noticed from recent social media posts that race entries are due to go live this weekend for our Christmas Cracker 10k event on Sunday 11 December.

Those of you who have joined the club recently might not be aware, that we ask all our club members to help make the race a success by volunteering on race day instead of running the race. It takes over 200 people to make the race happen, so we really do need all members to lend a hand.

The only exceptions are club members who have joined the club in 2016 AND never run the race before.

Everyone who volunteers does still get to run the race though, when we run the course all together the day before the race, in full fancy dress, and then have a breakfast together afterwards as a thank you to our club volunteers.

So, if you joined the club in 2015 or earlier, OR if you’ve joined this year and run the race previously please don’t enter the race online, and we’ll be in touch in October to give you more details about the volunteering.

In the meantime, please keep the weekend of Saturday 10 and Sunday 11 December free in your diaries.

Thanks everyone.

Malcolm
Cracker Race Director

This year’s race takes place on Sunday December 11 at 11am, and all runners are encouraged to wear fancy dress, or at the very least a piece of tinsel. The route starts at the Grand Pier and covers a flat course along the beach, through Uphill and back along the prom before ending on the beach again at the pier...read more

Mud, sweat and tarmac

27/06/2016 20:58:54

The past week has proved a busy one for Weston Athletic Club’s runners, with two very different races to occupy them, and test their spring training regimes. Tuesday saw the running of the club’s own Beacon Batch - a five mile fell race starting above Burrington Combe and climbing 1,000 feet to the summit of the Mendips. Rain over previous days made for soggy conditions underfoot, and many muddy trainers. In a carbon copy of last year’s event, the club’s own Chris McMillan won the race by a clear margin of over 90 seconds in 34.39 - the same time to the second as his 2015 run...read more

Press Release - Club conquers Clevedon

19/06/2016 09:48:53

No fewer than 75 Weston Athletic Club members travelled to Clevedon on Tuesday evening to take on the annual Clevedon Midsummer 10k. The race is favoured by club runners across the area as a test of pace given its almost entirely flat route. This year’s event did not disappoint those looking to better their previous fastest times, and conditions on the evening were good with a cooler-than-of-late temperature and light breeze...read more

Snelling soars in Spain

13/06/2016 21:19:00

Weston Athletic Club member Paul Snelling has just earned himself a world title at the 2016 ITU Duathlon World Championships in Spain. The sprint event, which comprised a 5k run, a 20.5k bike ride and then a 2.5k run, attracted elite and age-group athletes from all over the world.

Paul’s category featured athletes from across Europe, Canada, the USA and Australia. Paul put himself in a strong position right from the start, and although the 5k run was a tough one, he finished with a lead on the second placed competitor of well over a minute and a half.

He maintained his advantage over the hilly bike course before tackling the final run. It was here that he found a final burst of energy to increase his lead by a further two minutes. This overall performance, plus his swift and practised transitions, enabled Paul to romp home a clear winner and world champion for his age group. His time of 1.18.03 was almost five minutes ahead of his closest rival...read more

Mob Match Friday 15th July

06/06/2016 21:56:56

The annual Mob Match 10k is not far away, Friday July 15th over the Tow Path course in Bristol. A free club invitational event against other local teams from the area. It is open to all WAC members, whatever the group you run with. We need to have a team of at least 20 runners, so the more the merrier. If you fancy wearing your club colours with pride, then could you please sign up on either the Club Championship page for this event or by emailing me tottlejh@gmail.com. I am also happy to take any queries you my have about the event. There are also plenty of details on the Great Western Runners site regarding the venue. Lifts I am sure can be arranged. There is a new HQ with changing, parking and a bar. Perhaps even some cakes could be arranged. Don't be afraid, come and join us. Looking forward to hearing from lots of you. Many thanks Jamie T.
