Weston AC battle the Boxing Day bulge
While most of us were regretting the fourth mince pie and second helpings of sprouts, 57 of Weston Athletic Club’s members headed north to Clevedon to take on the traditional four mile Boxing Day race around the town. A firm favourite in the racing calendar, the race attracts runners from far and wide and always has a special festive feel.
Mild and calm conditions this year, coupled with hard work in training, proved a winning combination for Weston’s runners, with many recording their best times for the race.
First to finish for the club in 23.31 was Matt Wheeler, bringing a successful year of racing to a very fitting conclusion with yet another personal best to add to his 2018 collection. Rob Furlong and Richard Taylor were not far behind with Rob crossing the line in 24.10 and Richard in 24.29. Rob also bagged another best to bolster his 2018 list... Read more

Weston AC give it welly at Wellington
Just a few days after the Christmas Cracker, Weston Athletic Club were back out on the seafront again at the December running of the prom races. Although bitterly cold for the spectators, conditions were pretty perfect for the 300 runners who took on the five mile race.
Weston fielded a team of 63, and it was a good night for members chasing a personal best time, with 15 of them succeeding. Having run the race 42 times previously, Matt Wheeler was keen to finish under the 30 minute mark having come close many times previously. Finally the December race was where all the training came good, and Matt crossed the line in 29.52, joining the sub-30 club. Another notable personal best came from Julia Withers who has worked hard in training in 2018, with her pace benefitting as a result. Having achieved a new personal best the previous month, Julie returned to do it again in 40.36 this time. A sub-40 finish has to be on the cards before the season’s end... Read more

The majority verdict of my group this Thursday (19th) is to train as normal. We did however, agree that it would be good to have a festive drink (not just alcoholic) after the session. Any members of the club wishing to extend their social evening or any that are unable to attend the earlier festive run, please feel free to come and join us. We will be at the Duke of Oxford (Oxford Street) from around 8.30pm onwards. It will be good to see you, JT.

The next WAC hosted race is The Hangover on New Years Day - as well as serving hot drinks for runners and spectators we like to have lots of cake for them to buy. Money raised goes to local charities.
We are looking to have various home baked cakes to sell on the day. Therefore, if you like baking and are able to support then please email kandarunning@gmail.com to let us know what you can provide.
Many many thanks, Annette and Kim

Over 2,000 elves, snowmen and reindeer spotted on Weston’s beach
Anyone who’d had one too many at the Christmas party the night before could’ve been forgiven for thinking they were having a moment on Sunday if they happened across over 2,000 runners taking part in Weston Athletic Club’s annual Christmas Cracker races on Weston-super-Mare beach.
Reindeer, snowmen, Christmas trees, penguins, elves, angels and Santas lined up in their droves to take on the Christmas Cracker 10k and junior Mini Cracker 2k races on Sunday morning. Heavy rain overnight, a tide that had just turned before the race start, and strong gusty winds made for more challenging conditions than normal, but the gloriously festive runners were not so easily put off... Two races that couldn’t be much more different have occupied Weston Athletic Club’s runners in the past week. One a hilly ten mile off-roader and the other a flat 5k, both had their challenges. First up, the Full Monty Cute was the final race of the year in the club’s off-road racing calendar. Starting and finishing at the top of Ham Hill in South Somerset, the ten mile course takes in ten hills along its distance. This year, runners were treated to extra-sticky mud in abundance following recent heavy rainfall, which made the going particularly tough... Read more

To all WAC members, family and friends who helped out at today’s successful Christmas Cracker event a huge thank you for helping out and carrying out whatever duties were asked of you - without your help and efforts the event could not run. Many of the runners have fed back to us that the support and encouragement they received from marshals around the course was great and really encouraged them to continue running in what at times, for some, was difficult conditions.
The Christmas Cracker committee works hard to make the event run as smoothly as possible but always welcomes constructive feedback so please email any comments to kandarunning@gmail.com by 15th January 2019.
We’d like to wish you all a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year and wish you well with your running activities for 2019.
Yours in running, Annette and Kim

All Cracker Volunteers can experience all the fun of the Cracker route the day before the big day - 8 December. 10k run around the 2018 Cracker route; starting at the Grand Pier at 9:00am (Meet 8:45). Fancy dress is not obligatory but why wouldn't you when coming dressed as an elf, reindeer, fairy etc will entitle you to a free breakfast at the Bay Cafe after the run (approx 10:15/10:30). If that isn't incentive enough then there will be "incredible" prizes to be won!

Thank you to everyone who has volunteered to assist with this year’s Christmas Cracker – your help is very much appreciated and without it the event could not take place.
This is the final allocation document for all members Please could you look at the attached document and do the following:
If anyone cannot find themselves on the list who has volunteered please email us via the following email address: kandarunning@gmail.com
When you report to your team/marshal leader you will be briefed about your duty and some of you will be given maps and briefing papers. These MUST be returned to your marshal leader or to either of us before you go home as they need to be destroyed in line with GDPR regulations.
Think about the duties you have been allocated to undertake and then dress appropriately on the day with regards to weather i.e. those with outside duties need to consider dressing for cold/windy/wet Weston weather, you can get very cold stood about for up to 2 hours!! – think about foot wear as well, especially those of you on the beach as it can be very wet underfoot!!
Clap and cheer the runners on, this will help keep you warm and they appreciate the encouragement!!
Some of you allocated to Uphill may be working with volunteers from Weston Hospice. Please make them feel welcome.
Finally, we all must be mindful of not only our own welfare but that of the runners and spectators. Unfortunately, we live in times where there are those who may wish to cause us harm, so we ask that you remain vigilant and if there is anything that arouses your suspicions please contact your team leader, Kim or Annette immediately. We look forward to seeing you all on the day for a Cracking Event!!
