After four months of long training runs through rain, snow, wind, hail and ice, 26 runners from Weston Athletic Club toed the line for the start of the 38th London Marathon on Sunday. Temperatures soared to the hottest ever recorded at the race, reaching the mid-twenties. These unusually hot running conditions affected even the elite runners, and the masses replaced their hopes of personal bests with a renewed focus on staying hydrated and finishing in one piece...read more

This Tuesday (17 April) we will be returning to the far side of the field at Hutton Moor - we meet on the far side at 6:50 for a 7:00pm start; not in the leisure centre. This year as well as our circuits(s) Carol, together with a number of our newer leaders, will be taking a separate session each Tuesday aimed at helping you work on your technique and different speed paces. As well as running a number of drills and different exercises you will be using the ladders, hurdles, relay batons etc. The numbers will be limited each week to 10 or 12 so that Carol and the leaders have time to give you some individual support and coaching. Initially it will be done on a first come first served basis but we will want everyone to have the chance to take part a few times during the summer.

Please extend a warm welcome to new club members Luke Fielder, Darren Swift, Laura Cresser, Daniel Sanchez-Lopez, Joshua Mann and Matt Daiper.

Mad for it at Manchester Marathon
The marathon season got under way at the weekend with a sizeable field of 17 Weston Athletic Club members making the journey north for this year’s Greater Manchester marathon. Race conditions were pretty perfect, with dry, cool air and the lightest of breezes.
Rob Furlong was the club’s fastest finisher in a sterling time of 3.05.49. Stephen Powell crossed the line in 3.14.16, and Stuart Diamond soon after in 3.15.57. Cheryl Valentine was the club’s fastest female in 3.43.10. Helen Diamond ran her quickest marathon yet to finish in 3.49.09. Sheryl Selway also ran a strong race to finish comfortably under the four hour mark in 3.53.03...read more

Twelve runners from Weston Athletic Club did their level best to burn-off the extra calories consumed in Easter eggs at Monday’s annual Bunny Hop race in Shapwick. Heavy rainfall in the days leading up to the event made the 7.5 mile course tougher than usual, with plenty of mud on tap to slow runners down. A flooded 50m stretch of farm track a mile before the finish at least gave all participants the unavoidable opportunity to get the worst of the mud off their legs and trainers in a two-feet-deep icy mud bath...read more

Runners test their mettle with great results
The biggest race of the week was the all-important pre-marathon tester, the Gloucester 20. Used by club runners to gauge their readiness for spring marathons, the 20 mile route attracted 14 Weston runners. Conditions were cool with no rain and a light breeze – perfect running weather. Weston’s first runner to complete the three lap course was Kieron Summers. Kieron finished second overall in a spectacular time of 1.55.50, with every mile under six minutes, and also won his age category. Ian Connock followed ten minutes later in 2.05.29, and Richard Brent in 2.16.31. Joined by Steve Kibblewhite...read more
