Double top at Slaughterford

Mud, hills and a bitterly cold wind were no match for Weston Athletic Club’s runners at the Slaughterford 9 on Sunday. The nine mile-off road race covers a challenging course with 1,300 feet of climb along the way and the heavy rainfall the night before the race made for particularly hard-going conditions.

Out of the 400 runners taking part, Weston fielded a team of 21. Eager to retain his crown from last year’s race, Chris McMillan ran a strong race and finished some way out in front of the pack, with a clear lead for the final brutal ascent. He crossed the line in 56.03, a full minute in front of the next runner. Sharing the spoils at the top was Susan Duncan who continues to get stronger and faster. Improving on her 2018 race time by eight minutes, Susan was the overall female winner in a blistering time of 1.07.56, three minutes ahead of her closest rival. Both also bagged age category prizes... Read more

Weston’s women win at the prom

A field of over 300 runners lined up last week for the first five mile prom of 2019 organised by Weston Athletic Club. And it was an impressive showing of yellow vests with 85 of the runners representing the club. The cool, calm evening made for excellent racing conditions with many of the runners achieving personal best times as a result.

The club’s females overshadowed the men taking both of the top two spots in the women’s race. Immy Moroney won in 31.06 with Susan Duncan in hot pursuit finishing in 31.24. Susan also bagged a new personal best by a second. Michelle Fryer took third club spot with her 34.19 finish... Read more

IMPORTANT NEWS ABOUT MENDIP MUDDLE AND HANGOVER

20/01/2019 10:56:48

We have a new race director for the Mendip Muddle. Martin Hurcombe has agreed to take on the role from Carol O’Leary who stepped in temporarily when Tony Hogg stood down a couple of years ago. Martin’s involvement will allow Carol to focus on the junior prom races and the Mini Cracker.

With regards to the Hangover, your committee took the decision last week that this year’s event would be the last one for the time being and certainly the last one on the current course. In recent years as both road traffic volumes have increased and the race has become more popular, it has become more and more apparent that the two things are not compatible! This year again we dealt with impatient drivers and tight squeezes and we are not prepared to put our runners or volunteers at risk.

Thank you Martin and Carol for all your hard work directing both races.

Tales of the Riverbank

Weston Athletic Club’s racing year got under way at the weekend with the Riverbank Rollick race - an almost ten miles off-road event across fields, through woodland, up hill, down dale and along the bank of the River Severn in the shadow of the new bridge.

It was all to play for this year, with a revised longer than usual route, meaning every runner was guaranteed a course best from the outset. It was a good showing from the club with 17 men and 16 women toeing the line in yellow vests

And club members did not disappoint with a convincing set of results including two podium placings. Overall race winner with a margin of a minute was Kieron Summers in an exceptional time of 1.03.06. He was followed by three runners from Chepstow Harriers before Matt Wheeler crossed the line in fifth place with a 1.09.25 finish. Rob Furlong followed hot on his heels in 1.09.38. Both Matt and Rob scooped second place in their age categories... Read more
