The double dirty dozen

Sunday saw 24 of Weston Athletic Club’s members make their annual pilgrimage to Minehead for the Exmoor Stagger - arguably the toughest and the most beautiful race in the club’s racing championship. The course covers 16 miles of off-road climbs and descents from sea-level to the top of Dunkery Beacon, Exmoor’s highest point, and back again.

This year’s event offered runners almost perfect racing conditions with cool temperatures and light breezes, although still a healthy amount of mud and water following recent rainfall.

Race victory was Chris McMillan’s for the taking, and would have been a clear and convincing win had the club’s fastest runner not taken a wrong turn on his return from the beacon. Chris’s reward for covering the extra distance was second place in 1.51.35 - less than a minute behind the surprised winner...Read more

Important information about Junior Prom run 24th Oct

21/10/2019 11:02:59

The club committee met last week and agreed that we will reinstate the junior prom run and Mini Cracker races. There have been a number of changes agreed concerning the safeguarding and safety of the runners. These include: 2 races will take place one at 6:30 for 4 to 10 year olds, one at 6:45 for 11 to 15 year olds. Children aged 4 to 7 will need to be accompanied at all times on the run by a parent or guardian. We will need to ensure that children aged 4 to 10 are returned to their parent or guardian at the end of the race. We will achieve this by a numbered rubber band matching system. The entry form will clearly identify the parent’s responsibility so please take time to understand this when signing up before the race. All children aged 4 to 10 will need to sign in before every race even if they have their number so that we know who is running and can allocate bands. Please ensure entry by 6:20 on race evenings. Paper race forms will be available on Thursday night this week. In order to test out new procedures the race this week will be limited to those children whose parents are members of Weston AC. Children who do not belong to WAC members will be refused entry this month. We are hopeful of being able to open the races up to everybody from the November race onwards.

Training Saturday 19th Oct 2019

Please note that the training session tomorrow morning (8:00 on 19/10/19) with Jason will be meeting on the road at the top of Ashcombe Park as shown on the training diary and not at other location that was shown there earlier in the week.

Burnham brace of races

It’s been all about Burnham this week for Weston Athletic Club, with two club championship races in the town in four days.

Thursday evening saw the first race of the winter 5k series taking place on a blustery prom. Fifteen of Weston’s members took part, and four of them finished inside the top ten. Kieron Summers was first home overall, sneaking inside the 17 minute mark at 16.59. There was little to split the next three finishers, who took fifth, sixth and seventh spots respectively: Richard Taylor in 18.35, Matt Wheeler just four seconds behind him, and Nathan Ingram in 18.54.

It was a similarly close-fought race for the club’s women with Nia Davies crossing the line in 21.41, Jo Coveney ten seconds behind her in 21.51 and Michelle Fryer just three seconds after Jo...Read more

Weston run from coast to country

Two races dominated the club championship fixture list for the weekend, with Weston Athletic Club members spoilt for choice between the hilly coastal route of the Portishead multi-terrain 10k and the Forest of Dean half marathon.

Twenty-six Weston runners assembled on Saturday morning on a blustery and decidedly damp Portishead promenade for the 10k event. The challenging course featured short sharp climbs and more than the usual amount of mud thanks to the recent heavy rain.

Chris McMillan ran the course so fast that the race organisers were taken a little by surprise, not expecting anyone back quite so soon. Chris crossed the line to take the race win in 36.18, over a minute and a half ahead of his closest rival. There was little to split second and third club spot, with Chris Selman finishing fourth overall in 40.49 and Matt Wheeler fifth in 41.01...Read more

London Marathon Places

07/10/2019 15:22:31

A number of us (including me) have received our annual sorry letter from London together with a training top for most of us. The club will hopefully receive 3 places for the 2020 race (to be confirmed based on the number of members who have joined EA) As usual we will distribute these by a ballot at our Xmas run in December, the first draw for people who have not run London before the remaining 2 (if we get them) will be drawn with everybody who meets the qualifying criteria which are: You must have been with the club for 12 months i.e. been through one 31/3 renewal. You must be a member of EA You must have entered the race and have proof of rejection Please hold on to your proof of rejection. If you wish to enter the draw please let me have a copy together with confirmation of whether you have run the London marathon in the past (whether as a member of WAC or not)
