September 2019

Best wishes and quick recovery to Susan, Mel and Dave.

29/09/2019 22:16:01

Yesterday's Portishead race was overshadowed by a very nasty fall for Susan Duncan who fell heavily whilst in the lead of the race. Susan was first taken to Southmead hospital and then quickly transferred to the BRI, scans showed 3 breaks to her jaw. Susan was operated on this morning and we hope she has a quick and complete recovery. Whilst talking of broken bones I learnt yesterday that our President, Dave Jones, broke his ankle in a slow speed motorcycle accident last Saturday but only went to A&E on Friday to get it checked out and had confirmation the right ankle is broken. Dave is currently in a boot and has to go back to the fracture clinic on Tuesday for full treatment. Completing an unhappy trio of messages about breaks is Mel Biddington who most of you know damaged her ankle at TWAC 2 weeks ago now. X-rays last week showed up that an old injury had been disturbed in the accident and Mel too is in a boot for 4 weeks. I am sure we all wish Susan, Mel and Dave quick recoveries.

Message from our friends at the hospice

25/09/2019 08:54:36

It’s the hospice’s 30th anniversary year in 2019, and one of the events we have planned is a birthday celebration night on October 19. This is a little different from most of our events in that it’s not designed as a fundraiser; rather, it is a celebration of the hospice’s 30 years to which we’re inviting staff, volunteers, and supporters.

We’re acutely aware of the magnificent support which WAC gives to the hospice each year, through the Christmas Cracker and support and participation in our own events. If anyone from the club is keen to attend, we’d love to see them there.

For background info, although this is a ticketed event at Cadbury House, the tickets are priced to cover costs, rather than to make a profit; we want the event to be as accessible as possible for those who would like to come, and so it’s first and foremost a celebration rather than a fundraiser.

The cost per ticket is just £30, which includes a glass of fizz on arrival, a three-course dinner and coffee, live music from the Lipinski Band, and then a DJ to ensure the party continues until late. It promises to be a really special occasion and a lot of fun. I’m sure your members would enjoy the evening, whether they came along in small numbers or opted to organise a bigger group.

Prior to now, tickets have been offered to staff and volunteers, but we do plan to share info about the event with the public shortly. However, we were keen to give WAC an advance heads-up, as tickets will be allocated on a first come, first served basis – so do please let me know if you or any of your members are keen, as we’d love to see you there.

Christmas Cracker

23/09/2019 08:53:09

The Christmas Cracker race is only 11 weeks away! On Sunday 8th December. It is our biggest and busiest race of the year. As usual we need everyone who is available to help ensure the race goes off smoothly and is another huge success. This of course means YOU! A survey will soon be landing in your email inbox which allows you to let us know if you can help and what you are available for. There are many jobs to be done both inside race HQ and outside on the course. As well as race day help we also need help on a few tasks leading up to the day of the race so you may be able to help us with those.

Most importantly please, please , please complete the survey. It only takes a few minutes and saves us a huge amount of time chasing members to try and find out what they can help with. All helpers get the chance to come along on Saturday 7th December and run our own club version of the race, the “Not Cracker” with a free breakfast afterwards. So don’t miss out and please let us know what you can do by completing the survey as soon as it arrives.

Weston do it by halves

Over 60 runners from Weston Athletic Club toed the line on Sunday morning with 12,000 others for the start of the Bristol Half Marathon. The hot temperature was not ideal for running, and made the going tough.

Weston’s fastest man and woman were, unsurprisingly, Susan Duncan and Chris McMillan who both continue to put in stellar performances time after time. Susan ran her fastest half to finish in 1.25.08, second in her age category and tenth woman overall. Chris finished the race in 14th place overall with his blistering time of 1.13.44, only 38 seconds off his personal best.

Kieron Summers also took second spot in his category with his impressive time of 1.15.49, while Matt Wheeler was third in his with his 1.24.28 finish...Read more

Weston have the power

Sunday morning’s cool autumnal sunshine set the scene for the 28 runners from Weston Athletic Club who travelled to Oldbury Power Station for the annual 10 mile road race organised by Thornbury Running Club. Fast and flat, the route sticks to quiet country lanes with few distractions.

Weston’s runners performed outstandingly, with Susan Duncan stealing the show and winning the women’s race in a blistering time of 1.03.48. Nia Davies and Jo Coveney took second and third club and category positions in 1.13.28 and 1.14.29 respectively.

Chris McMillan finished third overall, averaging sub-six minute miles with his 55.53 time. Chris’s time, along with Kieron Summers in 57.00 (fifth overall), Chris Selman in 1.01.56 and Matt Wheeler in 1.02.49 earned Weston’s men the overall team prize...Read more

Weston AC do battle for cake

Crook Peak Cake Race starts and finishes at the foot of the hill, and although only three miles long, features two steep climbs to the crest of the peak and the top of Wavering Down. Still running on top form, Chris McMillan took overall race victory and was rewarded with the spoils of a giant chocolate cake for his 19.05 finish. Susan Duncan missed out on first place to finish second female overall in 23.50. Matt Wheeler, Adrian Noble, Helen Diamond and Liz Green all won their age categories.

Matt was narrowly beaten by Chris Selman who crossed the line in 22.12. Michelle Fryer and Bex Vaughan both ran strong races to take second and third club pots in 26.44 and 28.50...Read more
