Picture the scene. A snowy Sunday Xmas Morning in the Mendips – suddenly 6 of WAC’s most hardcore members suddenly becomes 4, when Gerry and Teresa disappear into the undergrowth. Gerry said he was having problems with ‘the Artichoke’ from dinner the preceding night. That’s a new name for it Gerry! Whatever it was Teresa had a smile on her face. And now they’re advertising for a couple of members to join them on a fun weekend. Hmmmm....that's why they call them adventure races.

For the second year, we are taking part in the Ace Race XXX - a continuous 30 hour adventure race in the Lake District on 5/6 Feb 2005. It is a team event, and we are part of a team of 4. We are looking for two enthusiastic, tireless and capable supporters, who can navigate well (in a van), drive a van, prepare food and energy drinks, stay awake and generally sort out our kit (including bikes), providing back up support throughout the event while we are taking part. It's a big commitment but if anyone fancied doing it we would be eternally grateful and would of course pay for all food and transport throughout the weekend. We would need to leave around 4 on the Friday and would be back by Sunday evening. Would be a good introduction to adventure racing for anyone who'd like to know what it's all about without actually running! We need to know within the next couple of weeks, so if you are interested, please drop us an email asap.

Rich Coleman [WAC]

Shin Splints :Stretch well before running. Make sure you've got decent trainers which have plenty of miles left in them - fit new insoles if necessary. Don't spend too much time running on the roads, get off road and enjoy the countryside, you will vary your stride more. After every run get a ice pack or pack of frozen peas (wrapped in a cloth) out of the freezer and apply to shins for 10min or so.Cross train - introducing cycling and swimming will ensure that all muscle groups are stressed, not just the leg groups. Cross training also allows you to ease back on your running but maintain your fitness.

Thanks for the advice. My trainers are 6 weeks old and I broke them in gently so they shouldn't be a problem. I swim, cycle and do various exercise classes as well as run so I guess I need to do the off road thing, cut back a little and buy lots of frozen peas!!. Roll on Sunday for a run on the Mendips.

Senior 'B':S.Jenkins(c), M.Dunstone, M.Freeman, T.Webb, M.Potter, B.MorleySurely the captain's role is to motivate his team mates. I know of no better way to do that than by buying everyone several large drinks (be thankful that Claudine is not in the B team otherwise you would have had to buy a whole bottle of vodka!). What do you think team mates?

Well done to all who did the Endurancelife Challenge this weekend, a fifth of the entry was WAC! It was a cold, wet, muddy and very tough course. Shaun did us proud with 3rd Place, Ruth with fastest female runner and Team 'Skoda Clarks' were 1st relay team. It was great to have a crowd there and by the looks of the beginner mountain biking hopefully more next year. Many thanks to Sara for the brilliant photos (as if we won't be remembering it from the mud in our shoes forever) and with great thanks to Jim for training us every week to be kayak kings which meant I was never last off the water again!

I was stood at the start deciding if I should mention if the vodka drinking rumours were true ;-), If it is true it looks to work quite well, I lost you after 3 miles. I was either lacking in vodka intake or that thing called training... Well, on the training bit, is the Thursday run still in on for tomorrow? I would like to be able to come to one and not get injured afterwards and also, to be able not to seem like a complete freak and stalker in these races ;-)

I would just like to say a big thanks to Matt who introduced himself within the first 200 metres of the Cardiff 1/2 marathon on Sunday. Having only just got underway (proudly wearing my club vest) I heard a voice ask 'are you Claudine?'. When I replied that I was he laughed and said 'oh you're the one that likes vodka!' (he's obviously logged on our website once too often to read those lies my fellow club members keep putting about me!). Not bad to get recognised in amongst 2500+ runners - unfortunately this was in relation to my (alleged) vodka drinking and not my running ability!! Anyway - cheers Matt, your comments made me giggle for the rest of the day. Hope you had a great run!!

The team competition spans all nine races in the series. Teams to consist of six runners with the best four scoring in each race. Entries are being taken now, but the final deadline will be prior to the second race in the series (21st October). Team classifications are 'Senior Men', 'Male Vet (40+)' and 'Ladies'. Individual team members pay to enter the races, but it costs nothing extra to register the team.

We are delighted to see Monday nights back on, I havent got a pipe to put anything in(most runners dont smoke) and no one needs to eat humble pie...although i am partial to Cheesecake if your asking. Can I have a better clue, I was never any good at the Krypton Factor.Angry, i never get angry. Just lose my sense of humour over inaccuracies in black and white where people are named, had I known who you are I would probably have responded with a witty remark, but as your message was made incognito my reply was apt. I did however find the team handsome comment amusing and we will probably chuckle about this on Thursday.By the way my prefernce is aslo blackberry & apple pie!!

TOP TIP [Not saying]

When running with headphones it is advised that you do not but wet sponges on your head as this causes a crackling sound in your ears and you will lose all of your music you have specialy prepared to keep you going in the race.

Can i recomend the jenkins post race recovery plan, all you need is a long walk, rain optional, 5 pubs, roast dinner + pudding, 6 pints of your choice, sausage & chips,+ ice cream in any order you like, and a lift home from any relative who owes you big time.cant comment on the affects of a further bottle of wine as i crashed when i got home.but it does work,no aches and pains not even a headache,

I'm still alive (just), after picking up a injury from the epic 8 miler a couple of weeks ago and then I just managed a sweltering Cardiff 10K on Sunday so hopefully I should be back with the Monday club soon, maybe when I don't have any races on the Sunday before which might be awhile. Anyway, I'll be there on the 16th for the Prom Run.

A question for fed right up. What is the club doing to get new members to join (very little in my opinion). I may not be the fastest runner in the club but I am willing to turn up when I can given the constraints of having 2 kids under 3 and try my best. I see many joggers/runners out and about in Worle and these people would surely benefit the club. Mondays are an ideal intro into what running is all about not taken to seriously and we go at the pace of the slowest runner and stick together as a group. We may currently only have a maximum of 5 people going out on a Monday but a little support from those in power at this club might not go amis. Sorry Mr Williams if you think that we are only putting (to use your words last night) 'Rubbish' on this message board but I think that these issues need to be brought out in the open and I am quite willing to discuss them with anyone.

still cant believe our bit of banter has caused so much fuss,if there is a genuine concern, then it should be done up front, not throw insults, and i might ad i am very proud to be a wac member, and allways do my best to promote this club.as im sure we all do,nuff said.

STEVE JENKINS(Monday night trainer) [WESTONAC]

To hopefully bring this matter to a close i will say the following,Try and stay awake please no sleeping. When i (aka fatboy slim) joined the club i think i rang Paul Horton who encouraged me to come down on a Monday Night.Having turned up on the Monday night thinking i would not get my then fat @ss out of the car park i was helped along by Pauls encourgement and advice about running.Anyway to cut a very long story short, if it was not for that Monday night run i would not be the profesional athlete i am now, and getting well paid for it. Monday night runs were all i could manage then and it took me about 6 months before i even dared to go on a tuesday or thursday. I completly agree with what Graham is saying and having read Robs reply email to him, we will now bring it upon ourselves to promote our Monday runs. However what would be nice if the Monday night meeting time can be included in the press when results are printed. This was cancelled when i was off injured and i think everybody stopped turning up so i decided to try and bring it back to life so a little help would go a long way.Oh and should we have any new members join on the back of our Monday night runs i will want commision.(rich & graham i will discuss your cut later)Apart from that i am to happy to be a member of westonac(not sure about the proud bit rich i guess someone has to like the bright yellow vests)and look forward to freezing my @ss of tommorow night in the river/bog.Thanks for listening u can wake up now.

As a participant in road running races we are particularly interested in your experiences of racing away from your home area. The results are astounding. Please would you be kind enough to circulate the attached poster among your members and encourage them to consider 'adopting' us as their charity in the Bristol Half Marathon. We hope to use this as an opportunity to raise public awareness of our Agency and to raise funds to help us to continue our work with families and children.Thank you for your time.

Lots of things...1. Spoke to organisers of this Thurs Wrington run, say some places left and have had very few WAC entries. Can phone contact number to reserve an entry and still pay on Thurs. (for all those who would be devastated not to get entry on the night).2. A TACH runner spoke to me yesterday during the Pensford 10k, asked where you all were! Said there's normally a sea of fluro vests bobbing over the hills! My time was 55.03 please put on results and as only WAC lady I WIN 10 POINTS !!! yipeeee (Worth the heat exhaustion and thanks to Kathleen & Simon for telling me I looked good depsite aforementioned heat exposure).3. Would anyone be kind enough to volunteer some time (and foot power) to help me and only one other who have to risk assess and then course mark & unmark the 30 miles of West Mendip Way walk? We hope to start assess. on Sat 8th May and the course setup will obviously be in the days before and after June 6th. I will use bribes of cake! If you are able to help in any way please let me know at club runs or by email.I think that's it! Well done to everyone that raced anywhere over the weekend, it was hot and horrible!

Holly Challinor (Wife Swap- series 3) E-mail Holly Challinor (Wife Swap- series 3)

Posted : 14:06
We are producing the third series of Wife Swap and are very keen to feature a family who are passionate about leading an active lifestyle and following a healthy diet. We often find some of our best families though other people’s personal recommendations, so it would be great if you could help us with our search. They would need to be available to film with in the next few weeks (but only for a consecutive ten day period within that time frame) and have children living at home. If you are unfamiliar with the series, the format is that in each episode (there are 6 in the series), we take two families and the women of the families swap over for 10 days (i.e. they move into the other family’s home for 10 days). For the first 5 days the wives carry out the role of mum their have exchanged places with and follow her daily routine. Then after 5 days of living by the host families rules each wife is then given the chance to enlighten her host family with her philosophy on life and introduce some new ideas to the family. As well as being engaging television, we believe that the series offers a real insight into the different ways in which families organise parenting, work, domestic chores, how they choose to spend there social time, and their outlook on life. I am trying to find out-going and memorable families who love sport and physical activities, and have something positive to say about their families lifestyle. At this stage I'd just like to speak to people who are interested without any commitment to taking part. However, we're working to a very tight schedule and filming is due to start at the end of April/early May - so I need to hear from people as soon as possible! Any help you may be able to offer would be hugely appreciated. I've also attached an A4 poster that I thought might be useful if you have public notice boards at the centre or can be distributed amongst the club members. Please also feel free to pass on my contact details and forward this information onto other organisations/associates you think might be able to help in the search. Furthermore do not hesitate to contact me if you have any queries, you can reach me on 020 7013 4485. Thanks again very much for your help, I look forward to hearing from interested couples.
