Thanks to the 10 brave runners who joined Victor and I for last night's debut Massive night run. Apart from a couple of slips on the ice and a flat tyre at the end, it went without a hitch, so we plan to do another similar run next month.
Thank-you to everyone for heeding our advise and turning up in appropriate clothing for the conditions.
See you next time!

Hi Gang! Prom Run on Thursday! If there is anybody who is not running who could marshal for us, that would be brilliant, or maybe Curry lovers could come a bit early to marshal?
Long term forecast is showing possible snow? so those of you who have been on the Prom recently will know how it can get slippy in places when wet. We may need marshals to steer runners to the safer bits?
It is always great to have loads of support out there, the runners love it!

Christmas Cracker Race Sunday 5th December.- THE RACE IS STILL ON

Please note that whilst most of the country is fighting it's way through many inches of snow, Weston has been relatively unaffected. Therefore we have every intention of allowing the race to go ahead as planned. The current forecast is for slightly better temperatures on Sunday but we will continue to monitor the situation and if anything changes a note will be posted on this website.

As part of the Tuesday night speed sessions, the club will be organising a 5K handicap race for WAC club members every 2nd Tuesday of the month.

The route has been accurately measured starting at the Pier and follows the prom towards Uphill with the turn around being the same as the prom race. It then returns past the pier and onto the Cove restaurant. Here you will return back past the pier and finish several yards beyond it. Do not worry you will be told exactly where the finish is on the night!

Club members who wish to take part can either meet as usual at Hutton Moor or meet at the Pier at approx 7.20pm.

At the first race on Tuesday 7th December everybody will start at the same time so that times are obtained. (this is termed the scratch run in the race handicap world!). These times will then allow us to calculate your handicap for the next race.

What is a handicap race?

It is designed to level the playing field by adjusting everyone's start time based on their current 5K fitness. For example, if one person runs a 35 minute 5K and another runs a 20 minute 5K the faster runner would start 15 minutes after them.

In theory everyone will cross the finish line together but it rarely works out exactly. It is a great concept and a great motivator when you know you could beat someone in the club that normally you would never beat in a million years!

Hope you come and support the session.

Regards

Ian Carpenter

There is no precedence to this situation as no other race has been rescheduled, they have all been cancelled. Rather than have the debate via the message board can you let either Dave or myself have your views via e mail or at the Cracker on Sunday. We will post the decision next week. Options are to include or exclude the race in January as a part of this years Championship series.

**** The Not Cracker ****
09:00 Saturday 4 December
The Grand Pier

Why not get into the festive mood and join us for the Not Cracker, this Saturday?

No? Ba Humbug!

YES!! then come and join fellow club members to run the Cracker route. A Christmas flavour / fancy dress is essential to put a smile on our faces ready for the challenges of Sunday. We will return to town to freshen-up/change, so bring a change of clothes, wet flannel, wet wipes and then warm up with a full English breakfast in the Nook and Harbour about 11am ( any special food requests please let me know before otherwise you might starve! )

If you saw me last Tuesday then youre in, if you didnt, let me know ASAP so I can get numbers right. Entries on the day may mean sharing a sausage (oooo errr misses) so see me soon.

Thanks

Re night running head torches...
Disco, Rich C is right, and the Gamma torch at 12.50 looks like it could be a good option. Anyone thinking about embarking on our pre xmas Xtreme Massive night run must ensure that their torch supplies sufficient light for safety. I'd reccomend one that offers 50 lumens +, like the Petzl Tikka Plus 2, available from Sports Direct at 35. Might seem a lot of dough but better than breaking a leg! No offence to Victor, his torch may even be bright enough but I don't know the specs.

Hi Everyone. Very shortly you will see the Cracker Volunteer list appear on the welcome page. Please could you have a look at it to see where you are on the day. There are three pages and they detail (in long columns) before, during and after the race. You will probably see your name appear more than once!
Thank you to everyone who has volunteered to be chippies, strippers, pie men, bag ladies etc.
You will see there are still lots of question marks, for jobs stil to be filled.
If you haven't come forward yet, please don't be shy, we would love your help and its a great day, for you and your family. With over 2000 runners, the more people we have out there, the better.
I have tried to attend all club sessions for the past couple of months, but there are still a few people I have not managed to see, I hope you won't be offended but I've attached a list to the welcome page. Please could you contact me just so that I know where we are. If you are a new member and you entered the race before joining, then could you just let me know so that I can cross you off my list.
Please feel free to contact me about any of the roles, or the day, either by email, or on 07540 823017
Thanks a lot........11 days to Cracker day......Can't wait, great fun :)

Headtorch available at Wilkinsons and only 3.50. OK for looking at stop watch but not much good for running across Mendips at night unless you like hugging trees!

Rich C [WAC]

You may find that the headtorch modelled by Victor is only bright enough for the slower runner ! Do a search for Alpkit Gamma for a decent running headtorch at an affordable price. They even do a pink one if your that way inclined. Alpkit stuff is brilliant and its post free.

14 members of WAC battled it out on the "Circuit de Cheddar" F1 track last night. The red mist was in the eyes of all the racers as they tried every means possible to make the podium at the end of the evening.

Final results were

1st Nick Gifford (ringer brought in by Paul at last moment)
2nd Ian Carpenter
3rd Tracy Lewis

The FIA are investigating the tactics used by one respected member of WAC. "Dick Dastardly" Carpenter whose actions resulted in the race favourite (me!) coming 4th. This means a lifetime ban from Kart racing may be imposed!

Especially well done to the ladies Rachel & Marcella who battled well all night.

Thanks to Paul for a great evening.

I'm afraid I don't know anyone meeting that description, but I'm a recently qualified Circuit Training and 'Indoor Cycling' instructor, so if anything comes up in that department, please shout! I'm still waiting for some certification to come through before I can be REPS and insured, but should be ready in a few weeks.
Cheers, Pete. 07541 496546

Rich, what sort of commitment are you looking for, i have a friend who is a qualified yoga teacher, its not her day job so not sure if she would want to take too much on and could only do evenings. let me have a few details and i can see if she would be interested.

Hi Rachael
I can see the problem with the coffin dodger bonus points. I have dropped Matt a note to ask him to look into it as it's a programming issue by the look of it. Watch this space!

Dear Club Members
We are now at the sharp end of the club championship and therefore ask all club members to check over the results recorded against their names for this season in the "Club Championship" page. For the marathon runners out there please check that your time (fastest!) is listed in the "marathon event" (at the bottom of the page) as this is more difficult for the Web Team to track. Even if you don't consider yourself to be "in the hunt" for some "silverware" (I use that term loosely of course!) at the awards night it is important that your results are listed as it could have a bearing in the overall results for others. Please therefore drop the web team an email (details on the contacts page) with your updates. Many thanks.

Thank's for the offer it's really appreciated. We're staying in Witney though and looking at the map it would send you about 25 minutes in the wrong direction, you don't really want to be messing about on racing morning doing that!

Can you be enticed by a free buffet & plenty of chocolate?! If so then please come along to help send out the race packs for the Christmas Cracker 10k.

Due to some of our regulars being away, the Cracker Committee need approximately 6-8 volunteers to assist in collating the race packs in readiness to post out to runners. The stuffing party is being held on Friday 29th October, at 6.30pm - venue; Weston Hospice (in Uphill). Your assistance would be hugely appreciated (given the number of race packs involved, i.e. in the region of 2000!). A buffet is kindly being provided by the Hospice on the evening, & well also provide a rather large tin of chocolates to keep those energy levels up (although youll have to get in there quick as Malcolm has been known to polish off at least half a tin on his own!).

Please let me know (either by email or speak to me after training) if you are able to help out on Friday 29th October, in order that I can collate numbers accordingly.

Many thanks in advance for your assistance!

****CRACKER DAY DEC 5th 2010****

I have held off asking for volunteers until we got the first Prom and the Muddle out of the way, but I have been asked by a few people for details.

As you know, members of the club are unable to run the Cracker race due to the amount of volunteers needed on the day. We need in excess of 100 volunteers on the day (club members, friends & family).

I have started the volunteer list now. Please could you let me know whether you are available to help and also if you have any preference for time of day or a particular job.

As in previous years we have special jobs for Strippers, Chippers, Pie men, Bag men, Bag ladies, Sweepers, Good Naggers, People who stand around and look very busy in yellow vests, Chocolate eaters, oh, and there is even a special task for a Fairy who may want to spread tinsel around Weston. Dont say I dont give you a good choice and variety!!

Please don't be shy, e-mail, text, or phone me, or talk to me on a training night.

Any new members who want to have a chat about the day, please feel free to phone or grab me on training night for a chat.

Cant wait for the day and the whole build up......Love it!!!

Marc,
Not even if we start 5 miles in? Just kidding - we're just all jealous of your half time. It must be all those off-road marathons you've done this year, so I recommend a weekend of hard drinking. It may be the only way I can keep up with you at Abingdon.

Marc [WAC]

Hi Martin, thanks for the offer, I would normally join you but I'm away this weekend training hard... yeah okay I'm drinking!
Disco, that nickname had better not stick! If only I had known you would be this upset with me having a faster half time! :-) I'm sure you'll get me back soon enough anyway!!

Hi sean,

We stayed at the TimHotel le Louvre, its just off Rue de Rivoli that you run down around two miles in, Neale did get metro to start which was no problem, but its in a great position for family to watch race. Then its only a short walk up through the park to see you again at around 15/16 miles and time to walk to see you at the finish. Quite basic, but clean and friendly with continental breakfast.

Dave, it is restricted to 8 people due to safety and there is a minimum amount that you need to raise for the RNLI, so I am afraid it will not be possible.
On a Friday night the Westcountry Tri club meet at the Huntspill river, around 18:30. Might be your best bet now, if I here of anything else I will post it. RNLI swim next year you are always welcome.

Mendip Muddle - Your Club Needs You - Volunteers Needed

The Mendip Muddle race is just over six weeks away and the time has come to ask (and beg!) Weston AC members, their friends, family and random people they meet on the street, to help with organisation and marshalling duties associated with this event.

To that end, please can I ask you to email me, using one of the links below, if you would be prepared to help out as a member of the organising committee, a helper on the day or both. Please supply your name and contact telephone number in the email. We cannot host this event without the generous support of WAC and RNLI volunteers so please get in contact as soon as you can.

The wages are not great, just a cup of tea and a slice of cake, but think of the sense of enormous well being knowing that you are helping to raise money for charity and putting on a challenging fell race for our running colleagues.

Many thanks

The Pub has a reasonable car park, but car share if you can and try not to block up the car park.

**** CAMPING EVENT .. 20/21/22 AUGUST ****

WIMBLEBALL LAKE COUNTRY PARK
NEAR DULVERTON
SOMERSET
TA22 9NU

Just a reminder about an impromptu camping weekend at Wimbleball Lake.

There is a campsite at the lake, google WIMBLEBALL CAMPING for website and what is available including cafe, watersports, etc and how to book ( phone or email the cafe).

The general plan is to have:

an organised run (probably around the lake) probably Saturday afternoon or evening,
a group bike ride (off road bikes) suggested Sunday morning,
and opportunity to use the watersports facilities at the lake (depending on who goes, we could organise a group activity) Saturday and Sunday.

..and this will remain flexible along with other self generated/inflicted activities although midnight rugby or caravan rocking may be not well received by all campers :o)

Recommendation is to book early ( especially watersports as you could be disappointed ) and if camping, mention WESTON AC or WESTON RUNNERS. 14 pounds per night per pitch ( inc 2 adults) and no deposit is required but if you book and then cannot make it then please let them and me know.

Please email me if you are going and booked in.

I have spoken to the campsite and asked if WAC members could be grouped together, this is possible in their overflow field, but bear in mind this is slightly sloping but ok, grass only and no electricity, whilst there are no guarantees of weather or access to watersports, I am sure we will have fun.

Hi,

I'm helping to organise a relay around the coast of Britain.

The relay started in Blackpool on 9th May and is heading clockwise around the coast - currently heading towards the South Coast having covered over 2300 miles.

This event is about celebrating the joy of running and the fabulous coastline we can take for granted.

I'm writing to ask if anyone in your club would be interested in joining us. Details can be found on www.coastersgb.co.uk and
the main communication is via runnersworld forums under general running, 'round the coast of Great Britain. As the local co-ordinator I'll be happy for anyone to contact me for more information.

As this is being run be ordinary people fitting their legs in around work, family etc an actual schedule is difficult to predict, however current estimates have the at Bideford on 4th Sept with the aim of reaching The Severn Bridge by 11th Sept.

Would it be possible to post a message on your website looking for volunteers?

I Look forward to hearing from you

Cheers

Stephen Reid

Hi Pete
As far as I know the Crook Peak Cake Race is on 25th August. I updated the event the other day and now appears on the Events Calendar. The race is very low key and entry is only available on the day. I have added the contact details contained in the Fell Runners Handbook for this race so hopefully it should be accurate....if not please let me know so I can correct it!

Meet at the Plough Inn, Brinsea Rd, Congresbury to start at 7pm. Please don't park in the pub car park as there is limited space - there should be plenty of places in Mill Lane. The route is hilly with a couple of cheeky little climbs (a picnic compared to last week's Mendip Massive), mostly off-road and about 8 miles. You can view the route by clicking on the link below:

**** SUMMER SOCIAL RUN ***

Hash - Sat 24th July 7:00pm

To all new members and old members with short memories.
In case you don't know what this involves on Saturday, a brief resume.A choice of a run, a walk or a rest followed by drinks and BBQ, for members and families.

Steve lays a trail of flour around the footpaths of East Brent which the runners need to follow. There are points at which there are more than one trail to follow and it is up to you to find which is the correct trail, the wrong trails will terminate with a line of flour across the trail, it is quite appropriate to wait at these points and wait for the faster runners to check out the trails or drag as many folks along these trails as possible, this all helps to keep the pack together. There are a couple of regrouping points along the way. The total run is between 5 and 6 miles long.

Steve prayers for good weather seem to be working, so get on down to East Brent.

A word of thanks to Pete for a great run, Chairman Rob for his Chilli and Victor for his scones.

Two questions:
1) Is it a coincidence that The Swan had Chilli-con-Carne as a special that night?
2) Is a scone a cake?

Discuss.........

Please note that the race number system for the 2010-11 series will be the same as the last series. All competitors who enter the series will be issued with one number for the whole series. Runners must keep their number and re-use it in all races in the series. Runners who enter on the night must still go to Race HQ prior to the race start to collect their race number. **** THURSDAYS SUMMER SOCIAL WYVERN WIPE OUT ****

In line with our club name Thursdays summer social is an athletics event. The plan is a warm up run from Hutton Moor, at 7pm prompt, to Wyvern Sport Centre (you can go direct to Wyvern if you want ) and then have an hour or so of track and field events . Some old favourites and some new events.

The amount of effort, competitiveness, and torment is your own personal choice so dont come crying to me with whinges about things being pulled and stretched that you never knew you had this is a fun event which has enjoyed great success in the past and Tims plans for Thursday should continue this trend.

Cakes are by Team Hinchliffe and it is suggested we return to the Pavilion, next to Hutton Moor, for the beer and cakes.

Evening All,
I have arrived safely in Weston and I had the best day yet in terms of scenery. Yes, the Avonmouth docks area stands out as being the most stunning visual spectacle on the entire route and I am so very glad I took in this lush tree lined avenues and gothic inspired Victorian mansions.......

Forgive the sarcasm but after travelling from Hereford and through the Wye valley and past Tintern Abbey it was a stark reminder that Avonmouth is the pits of the earth. Anyway, I covered the 75 miles in 5h 12m in the saddle time and 6h 15m overall. A good effort overall. The last two days brings two full measures of pain however with Weston to Plymouth (approx 100 miles...groan) and the final leg to Lands End approx 90 miles. The knee was not too bad today so should be ok to get me to the end on Saturday. Looking fofward to training next Tuesday....anything to not have to sit on a blinking bicycle saddle.

Hi all,
Day 6 meant an easier day in the saddle today, covering a mere 74 miles and staying overnight at my brother's place in Hereford. A few problems with twinges in my right knee meaning I can't use too much pressure on that leg when pedalling so I've resorted to ibrufofen, ice packs and cold baths to try and get through it tomorrow. A relatively easy day again tomorrow with an overnight in Weston. Hope you all have a great Burrington Blaster race tomorrow.

Day 2 at WAC BB Campsite.

Morning after the day before ....
Vodka, Disco, Matt, Sarah, Annette, Jasmine and Bella pitched up and special guests Malcolm and Grace, Adrian and Naomi, Mike and Chris joined in for Saturday's task - the Golden Cap challenge.

Task winners: Malcolm and Claudine with Disco picking up a friendly tick en route.

After a dip in the sea a fish and chip supper (with Pete's scrumpy) was followed by Sarah Q leading the Bingo quest. Campers followed Sarah and joined in a closely fought and alcohol infused quiz. WAC team "Disco's Tick" won, closely followed by sore Victors team. The evening closed with midnight rugby and caravan rocking - Victor is up for eviction!

Sunday 9.15, Campers are up and sharing stories of flat beds, snoring, and the usual comparing of aches and pains, whilst watching Annette chase her tent down the campsite.

Hi Mike
basically there is a mile loop we have worked out to get more people out walking in the park. The route starts at the cafe goes over the road, around the path of this side of the park, back across the road past the cafe again to then turn left at the playarea. Then follow the pavement all the way round the circumference of the park (not back over the road though) and then returning to cafe as you arrive back at the playarea! This should be a mile. what i need to know is where the quarter mile points are as we will be putting markers here!!!!!
my tel no is on the christmas cracker page if you want to clarify anything
thank you very much Mike

**** CHARMOUTH CAMPING WEEKEND AND GOLDEN CAP CHALLENGE ****

Ok guys, out with the old sleeping bag and bent tent pegs and off to Charmouth.
Arrangements have been made at Manor Farm Holiday Centre Campsite to allow all WAC members to camp together, so when you arrive at the campsite to pay for your pitch, please say you are from WESTON AC.

For those who have not enjoyed the pleasures of Charmouth, other than the sheer delight of running up Stonebarrow Lane, a typical weekend usually involves:

Friday - Arrive, eat, drink, sleep

Saturday Arrive/wake up, eat, run, ache, eat, drink, drink, drink

Sunday wakeup, headache, drink, eat, headache, drink, go home, sleep

There is an outdoor swimming pool and plenty of open space for family fun. Fish and Chips on Saturday evening has been a success in the past and there is a club house where we enjoy Saturday evening entertainment (sometimes we get to play Victors favourite - Bingo) as well as drinking of course.

See you there!

Dave

Hi Everyone
Many of you will know that I am about to embark on a John O'Groats to Lands End (JOGLE) cycle ride over nine days starting on Friday, July 2nd.

This is something I have wanted to do for well over 20 years and finally I have plucked up the courage to do it. I won't exactly be slumming it as I'll be staying in B&B's along the route but my training hasn't exactly been intense with only six outings on the bike to speak of in recent months. I hope I haven't bitten off more than I can chew with this crazy challenge!

Anyway, my route is as follows (distances are approximate):
Fri July 2nd - JOHN O'GROATS -> INVERNESS - 120 miles
Sat July 3rd - INVERNESS -> PITLOCHRY - 87 miles
Sun July 4th - PITLOCHRY -> BIGGAR - 105 miles
Mon July 5th - BIGGAR -> KENDAL - 120 miles
Tue July 6th - KENDAL -> WHITCHURCH - 106 miles
Wed July 7th - WHITCHURCH -> HEREFORD - 73 miles
Thu July 8th - HEREFORD -> WSM - 68 miles
Fri July 9th - WSM -> PLYMOUTH - 101 miles
Sat July 10th - PLYMOUTH -> LANDS END - 88 miles

I will be texting various people on a daily basis to let them know that I got to the required destination in one piece and will ask them to post messages on the website accordingly.

In order to give me a greater incentive to complete this ordeal, I have created a sponsorship site in aid of the Cystic Fibrosis Trust. If you would like to sponsor me the web address is:

http://uk.virginmoneygiving.com/MorleyMarathonMadness

Thanks everyone. I'll see you at training on Tuesday night.
