Jim 2016 Championhip races [WAC]

Speaking of more people who do a lot for the club thank you Mark for getting the races for the first 5 months of 2016 on the championship page.
I know how long it take you to do each one so you must have given up a fair bit of your holiday to complete this for us

Sorry I'm still moaning but there is a difference here , no Weston ac can run the cracker it's our main event of the year a lot of work goes into it and we raise a lot of money for charity and the club .The hangover has over 40 club entries and Jim struggles to find marshals . Is that team work ?????? I know it's not much but the money raised goes to Barton camp . That is all.

I agree with the self proclaimed “Grumpy old git” to a point, we have similar problems in junior football, parents expecting things to happen, but very few willing to volunteer.

Doesn’t the Cracker prove that people are willing to help though, as there were a lot of volunteers there?

The Hangover is a less well known event, and is on New Years Day around lunch time, when many people will have family commitments.
Also, many of the new members aren’t necessarily “racers” so may not appreciate the importance of marshalling or what they can do to support the club in other ways?

Thank you to everyone who does give up their time to make this club function, it is appreciated.

Happy New Year!!

I think 'Grumpy/Moaning old git' makes a good point.
He/she also highlights some great candidates for Clubperson of the Year awards, although I know some of this list have won it before so aren't eligible.
I note Rob Skeen hasn't won it yet, this surprised me, pretty sure he's the race director of 9 junior Proms, the Mini cracker, Beacon Batch and the Worlebury Challenge, not to mention his coaching and group leader duties.
There are however many worthy candidates due to the hard work of these great volunteers highlighted by the 'Old Git'

Thanks to all the offers of help that I have now had I can confirm that we have enough marshals to safely put the race on. However we can alwys do with a few more to help with the marshaling, water station, finish area and kitchen so if you have still yet to come forward don't let me put you off

You would have thought with over 200 running members Jim would have no problems finding 20 marshals to help with the hangover 10 k not leave it to the usual 20 running members who always help out at the Weston Ac races !!!!!!

A lot of you already know that a group of local mums are planning to put on a weekly 2K junior park run in the new year. The club have kindly contributed financially in making this event become a reality & we are now being asked to submit a list of volunteers for the weekly event. Knowing full well that most club members are training or racing on Sunday mornings we are not expecting a huge number of you being able to support us but if you feel you could help out say once a month we would be very keen to hear form you. The start time is yet to be confirmed (between 9-10am probably) and it is going to be taking place behind Priory School. Volunteering time will be for about an hour max.

Shaleen- There is a distinct difference between 'not happy' and 'would've liked to have gone a bit quicker' I call this desire!

Andrew- You may have a point!

On more serious note, I'd like to say thank you to all the coaching team, committee, IT geeks, friends and family on behalf of all of us runners for all of the work you put in to make this club function on a daily basis.

We have noticed to Shaleen, He's miserable never happy with his times,He's soft he won't get his daps dirty and prefers to mince around on Tarmac, And since he's progressed from his slide rule and Timex to Garmin and Heart rate monitor he's got more boring. I reckon he's getting lazy and will never make a half decent runner .

For those of you who helped out by volunteering for this year's Christmas Cracker race, we will have race t-shirts available for you to collect from The Bay Cafe tomorrow evening before the prom run.

I will be there from 6.45pm to 7.20pm to hand them out, so come and find me before the race and I'll check you off on my list.

There are no smalls left, but everyone so far who has had a medium (but would normally take a small) has said that they fit OK.

If you can't make it to the prom, we'll also have them at the next couple of training sessions.

A note has just come out regarding a £10 early bird discount for entering both the Bristol 10K and Half.

Any prints ordered are made by Loxley Colour who are a professional printing company in Glasgow. They would fill any orders and post directly to the runner concerned. I have been able to arrange a discount code to reduce the price of the printing for anyone that is interested. The code is BNHR15. It will apply a 15% discount.

Some club members who have paid for England Athletics affiliation 2015/16 have recently received correspondence from EA saying their membership has expired. I have contacted EA & this was their response:

'We are aware of the problem but unfortunately our IT department are unable to fix this. It is due to the date the athletes were registered. As brand new athletes, registered between 1 January – 31 March, their registration is valid until 31 March 2016. Unfortunately, our IT department are unable to create a script which shows this on the portal, hence why the incorrect date is shown. As long as the athletes are showing as ‘paid’ on the Pay England Athletics section of the portal they will be registered.'

The problem has affected new & existing athletes, not just new as EA suggest. If you have any problems entering a race as an affiliated athlete please drop me a line & I will investigate & provide a screen shot of your paid up membership if needed. Let's hope the EA IT department get their act together for the 2016/17 season.

2016 London Marathon Ballot
The details of the 2015 London Marathon club allocation have recently been confirmed. Weston Athletic Club will once again be securing our allocation of club places based upon the number of members who have taken out UKA individual registration. (This year revised rules means that it is reduced to 2) We will be drawing the lucky winners of these 2 places out of the hat at our festive training night on Tuesday 22nd December this year in the normal way. The first place will be drawn just from those runners who have not run London before. The remaining place between everyone including those not successful in the first place draw.

The criteria for your entry into the draw is as follows:

1. You have been a member of Weston AC for over 1 year (therefore you have paid at least one club membership renewal). 2. You have entered the 2016 London Marathon ballot and have been unsuccessful. 3. You are registered with EA individually (i.e. you have paid the additional £12 on your membership fee).

If you wish to be entered into the draw and meet all of the above criteria please email Jim Wotton, using the link below, attaching a copy of your London Marathon rejection email (if they send one) or give me a copy of the cover of your rejection magazine. Good luck!

So far I have Helen and Stuart Diamond, Gary Iles, Jo Coveney, Wayne Entwhistle, Bryan Morley, Mark Hill, Tobias Hinchliffe, Kie Booth and Madeline Cook. Please confirm if you have run London before or not

Well done to all the 319 runners last night who completed our new 5 mile prom race route.
Thanks as always to the army of members and friends who turned out to help.
Any feedback on how the new route went would be appreciated. We have already identified the issue with congestion around the finish area affecting runners still out on the course, so will be looking to remedy this next month.

Hi Guy,
Thanks for your time, as you can see when I measured the revised course I did not want anybody to feel short-changed on the distance. I measured it about 1 metre from the wall so I think the big difference is how wide people went on the bends/turns and having to avoid each other. The shortest recorded was 3.13 but somebody told me they did 3.22 miles
Next month we will be back to the previous, well measured course (by Ian with his wheel not me), unless another seafront event comes along to surprise us.

I hope you all still enjoyed it though

Cheers

Jim

Can I add my thanks to the Whites and all their helpers for putting on a most enjoyable run this morning.
Guy re your suggestion of a club only championship event as luck would have it you will get your wish on the 25th Oct 15. The organisers of the Bleadon Levels 10K have just contacted us to advise that they are unfortunately having to cancel for 2015.
As this is the cross country Grand Prix race I am sure that many of you have that date in your diary and rather than try to re-allocate and re-arrange we have decided that we will put on a club only race to substitute.
We will use the Worlebury Woods Challenge course that Rob Skeen devised last year and we will bring forward to a 9:30 start time.
More detail to follow but something to look forward to.

Brilliant club event earlier at The Whites 2x2x2 on the Mendip hills. If you haven't done it yet your nuts. This should also be supported by making it an off roader in the Championship for next year, it would be brilliant having one or two big, club only races in the Championship, have a think about it Jim Wotton. Also, why doesn't the club choose an event, like a Gwent cross-country race, lay on a couple of coaches, pay for all club entrants, set up a club area at the event and hit it on mass.....I think as a club we're missing a trick to be a club!

I know we have the Mendips on our doorstep …. But how about seeing some quintessentially English countryside just past that doorstep?

On Sunday 27th September it is the 5 Valleys Walk. You can walk or run the route (or take a bus if you don’t want to do the whole route) – but note it is NOT a race. There are no finishing medals or prizes. The route does take in some amazing scenery and money raised does go to a very worthy charity. See https://www.meningitisnow.org/support-us/featured-events/five-valleys-walk-2015/ for details. I think I have done this around 14 times – and I plan to do it again this year. If you want to know about this event please give me a shout

"The Real Mendip Challenge"

After discovering that there's s 50 mile Mendip Way Route, of course I decided that i would put together a team to run it.

It will be on Sunday 13th December.

So who's mad enough to join me??

Looking for people who will work together as a team to complete this awesome challenge.

This time I will promise ice cold beers on finish along with Mrs Woots famous chocolate brownies and homemade medals.

You can also expect at the half way point a delicious hot pasta dish from Mummy Woots.

No doubt "The Squirrel" Barry Hall we keep us hydrated by perfectly positioned water bottles on route.

The plan is to start in Frome at sunrise and to arrive in Uphill some time later!!!

What a great way to prepare for all the extra calories you put on over Christmas by loosing a shed load just before.

Also this is the unofficial WAC all day Christmas party!!!

Christmas hats at the ready and all you need to do now is to say YES.

Also we will be doing an early morning sun rise run to test out the Frome to Wells route section to see the sun rise over the Mendips. Date to be confirmed and the mileage is 20 miles.

If your interested in either then please contact me on 07861250448.

I've set up a Facebook event page too.

Love you all

Woots

Hi James,
Your question re West Mendip Way.
Via google I found a lot of route detail. One of the best sites for description of the route seemed to be on Wikepedia which also had lots of links to maps etc.
After you have gone from Uphill to Wells it goes to Shepton Mallett, then on via the highest point on the route to Frome. (This is where it now finishes)
I think Rich Colman and others did the route from Uphill to Shepton which was about 39. The full route to Frome is probably the 50 or so that you are planning to do next

***SPECIAL SOCIAL EVENT PLANNED FOR THIS MONTH***
Fancy a spot of Disc Golf at Mendip Outdoor Pursuits?
Our social guru Mr Snelling has organised a club night out to Churchill to have a go.
Teams of four, 10 hole course, and probably (like all good WAC socials) food afterwards.
We can have either Wed 19 or Thur 20 August.
Soooo....
Question 1 - are you interested?
Question 2 - which date of the two on offer would you prefer? (and say if you can make both)

Anyone who likes running long, off road and in the dark this is for you!!!

I'm organising a 'Night Mendip Challenge Run' to get used to running at night and because I love it!!

Here are the details;

Date - Saturday 15th August

Time - 7pm

Meeting place - Uphill Boat Yard

Route of Run - Full length of 'The West Mendip Way' starting in Wells.

Distance - 30 miles (if we don't get lost!!)

Items required - Head torch with spare batteries, hydration pack of some sort, off road trainers, jacket, bit of food and most importantly a sense of adventure!!

We will hopefully start at around 8pm so will be mostly running in the dark.

I will arrange lifts for people from meeting point to the start of the run in Wells.

I will also provide cold beer and food at the finish!!

Anyone crazy or brave enough to want to do this please contact me on 07861250448.

At present there are 3 confirmed and 3 thinking about it.

Please phone me to ask any questions too.

Hi All,
Just to confirm my message given tonight please can any outstanding membership renewals be paid as soon as possible.
As the club has been so successful and grown in size the tasks for the membership secretary and result co-ordinator have become increasingly onerous. In order to try and assist your committee passed a decision that club championship points would only be awarded after 31/5/15 to members who had renewed their membership. This decision was widely publicised on the website and facebook pages. As we are now nearly in July the ruling has been applied to events from last weekend.
As we have 2 championship races this week I wanted to remind anybody that this may apply to so that they can make the necessary payment if they wish

Just to let any one interested know that I did the Half Ironman 70.3 at Wimblebourne yesterday, and did it in a time of 5hrs 28min. Tough bike and tougher run coarse. This put me in 7th position overall in my age group and as a result I qualified for the Ironman 70.3 World Championships which are being held in Austria in August.

Dear Friends
Some of you may remember the record breaking attempt I was involved in last year to help carry a baton around GB to set a new world relay record of 7,500KM.
It failed because 1 person stopped and put it down so we are trying again this year!
There are South West stages passing through Weston between 24/25 July 2015 and you could part of it.
The stages are about 12K long and if successful, you could be part of world record history.
Please see the above link and claim a stage to be part of this exciting once in a life time chance.
Best wishes
Iain

Hi Guys,
Thanks for all the feedback on the new summer 5K route I asked for it so no offence taken.
It is good to see that the consensus is that you prefer this route so we will definitely use it for the June and July races and see if it handles a few more runners OK.
I can confirm that our chairman spent many hours walking up and down the path with the wheel to make sure that not only was it accurate (with the correct amount of tolerance) but that it is also not long as we want you to get accurate times.
I would also confirm that the reason for the course having the first turn at exactly 1.5K (from the start) and the second at 1K (from the start) is so that those people who can handle their pace in K's can know exactly where they are on the route. As you pass the first cone that you come to it is 1K after you have turned and come back to the same cone it is 2K, at the finish line turn it is 3K and then at the final turn it is 4K (You have Mr Skeen to thank for that piece of planning)
Cheers Jim

You have two legs of 1.5k and tw0 legs of 1k.If you add that up it makes 5k.
Measured with a wheel not from outer space.

Just wondered why we didn't run to the furthest point on the leg out as previous route before turning round. That way less further to go out next time round when feeling knackered! (Probably due to congestion and less space?)

Hi All
It was a very windy first handicap on the new summer route but 9 pb's were still achieved from the 32 people that started.
First home in a new pb of 20.41 was Rob Skeen, followed by Kieron Summers and Mark Hill. Fastest run of the night was Kieron in a time of 17.30 followed by Guy and Wilf

The initial feedback on the new route seemed to be positive but can you please let Ian or me have any comments or suggestions that you wish to make.

Hi All,
Thank you to all the helpers and marshals who enabled us to put on the April run with 242 finishers and a large number of PB's by club members including Chris in second place overall and Wilf under 30 for the first time.

I am sure that we all hope Wilf recovers quickly from his efforts.

If you are looking for VFM then Burnham wins hands down over Street due to locations. Gerry I'm pretty sure the race is actually ran by Burnham Swim Academy (commercial business) not Burnham Running club. Also Burnham Run club are about to start a Parkrun (5K) in Apex Park every Sat which is gonna be FREE! Something else to consider Jim?

Ness [WAC]

Posted : 13:46
I'd vote for BoS too. Street is tricky to get to in time after work, and it's not the most thrilling of courses. Also, where's the sense in going to Clarks Village when all the shops are closed?

Gerry H [wac]

Posted : 11:35
Jim, I would vote for return of BOS 5k, they are a small club & should get the support of local clubs, it would be great if we could turn up on mass like we do for our Prom races, that was one of the problems before it only attracted a v small field which is a bit daunting for us slower runners.

Hi All,
I have noted with interest the comments on facebook today re the Burnham-on-Sea 5K race. The last of the 2104/15 series took place last night. Well done Kieron on your PB.
Until 2011 the BoS 5k series was in the Championship not the Street races. At that time BoS increased their charge to 5 per race/ 30 for all 6 in the series. At the request of the runners, at that time, the races were switched to Street.
If there is a popular request that we revert to including BoS and not Street I am more than happy that we do this. So far we seem to have a yes for BoS from Kieron, Michelle, Pete C, Andy C and Guy.
If anybody wishes to speak up for the Street race or has a problem with changing the dates and venue for the 5K races in the Autumn please put a note on the site or drop me a mail.
Cheers

The clocks go forward this coming Sunday which will mean glorious light evenings. With that in mind I am planning to start weekly Monday evening cycle rides from Bleadon Cutting - leaving 6:30pm on Monday 30th March. This will be a steady ride out on the levels on quiet roads. It's a nice route ( 30 miles max but starting off with around 22 miles ) with a couple of hills and a number of points where riders can drop off early if they so wish. The plan is that it will be a steady ride, aiming for individuals to recover from weekend runs / races etc. There will be a few ex. triathletes in attendance so loads of free advice on bikes, bike fit, training, event selection etc. Anyone and everyone is welcome, No charge, No one will get dropped, just a gentle spin out on "balmy" summer evenings !

***UPDATE ON YOGA FOR CLUB MEMBERS***

Because some people who were interested in the sessions weren't able to make all six planned, Rebecca, our instructor, has said that people can turn up to individual sessions (starting this Friday 6 March - arrive at 6.50pm for a 7pm start - Bleadon Village Hall for 6.50 each.

She has also offered to hold the reduced price of 5 a session if people commit to the remainder of the course. So if you can't make the first three Fridays but want to do the last three she will accept a payment of 15 for these three sessions.

For those people attending can you please make cheques to R L Miller and for the first session can you please get there for 6.50pm to enable registration and a discussion about any injuries to take place.

If you've got your own mat then take it if you prefer to use your own. However, Rebecca will provide mats and blankets for the sessions. You can wear comfortable clothing: leggings, tracksuit, vest, t-shirt is fine and you will be barefoot during the session.

The classes are for beginners.

Please be aware that for the next 12 weeks Bleadon Rd is closed due to drainage works. You will need to go down the A370 to Bleadon Mill and come back along Bridge Rd. (there are diversion signs in place).

Yes, as Jim says, for those of you doing the Gloucester 20 on March 8, the plan is to have a WAC table (thank you to Mandy for organising) along the route (probably soon after the brow of one of the hills) which you will pass three times during the race. It will probably be managed by friends and family so if you want to put your own drinks, gels etc on there please make sure you stick a label on each item with your race number on so they can look out for you as you approach. You can hand these over on race day before the start. There will also be some water and jelly babies for club members. Hopefully Jim will let us take one of the club flags with us too so the table is easy to identify during the race. If you want to discard tops etc as you pass you can do that too, and these can be rounded up and returned to you after the race or at club training the following week. Any questions just shout.

Hi Steph, The Babcary race is all on road and had been inadvertently shown as off road. All of the races so far on the site have been checked again and are now correct. Mark has yet to add the Street 5K on 11th March to the championship page but it will count as one of the races.

Apologies for any confusion over Babcary, there are still 12 short off road races on the calendar with 4 to count. There are still 2 road misc. the last of which being Clevedon boxing day run which again will be the grand prix race.

Plus the street 5k for March isn't on the list..

It will be of the form of a 4x3km relay. There is a women's and a men's race. Hoping to get it funded if I speak nicely to the committee. Hey All

We are running a Bikeability (road cycle safety) in the half term holidays.

This is a fully accredited and government backed training scheme.

It's a full day course 9-3 so an ideal way to learn a new skill and keep out of the house. It's also massively subsidised so costs just 5!

It's open 9-14 year olds who can ride a bike and want to learn to ride it safely on the road.

The course will be on Fri 20th Feb at @Worle Sports Centre

Places are limited to 12 and 6 spaces have been filled so get in quick! Email me marc@sole-events.co.uk if you want to snap up a place.

I've been asked by people in the club to run an adults version of the course to help people feel more confident...if there is enough demand I would be happy to put a course together to suit.

Listen up WACsters...

Want to improve your core strength and flexibility?

Want to increase your chances of staying injury-free?

YOGA is where it's at, and your club is giving you the chance to do WAC yoga sessions for runners.

Would you be up for that? On a Wednesday or a Friday night? Cost probably about 4 a session.

If you're up for it, post a message and state your preference for Wednesday or Friday.

Let's get planking peeps. Might even lead to some PBs.

Your Club needs you !!

The search is on for our next Club Secretary.

After too many years to mention(!) I have decided to resign from my role as Club Secretary, due to other commitments.

What does the role entail I hear you ask?

In summary:
- Arranging and taking the minutes of the club's Committee meetings, including the Annual General Meeting (not overly onerous - approximately 4 meetings per year (inclusive of the AGM). Booking the respective venues.
- Preparation of documentation for the AGM (late April) - however, thankfully, it has been proposed that the AGM documentation will in future be emailed to club members (by the web-team), which saves a huge amount of (your) time stuffing 200+ envelopes.
- Receiving / dealing with post addressed to the club's P O Box (this is delivered to your home address - no requirement to collect from the Post Office).
- Dealing with emails sent to the club secretary email address: these mainly relate to upcoming races or information from England Athletics. Any correspondence which the committee should be informed of can simply be scanned and emailed to them.
- You will also be responsible for obtaining the club's London Marathon places (not a complicated task - so never fear!)

Anyone interested in taking on the role should contact our Club Chairman, Ian Carpenter via the email link below (and no, you don't need to send a selfie or upload a clip on YouTube as to why you think you should get the role!)

I can e-mail Bideford with your details, but you'll need to take a completed entry form to the race organisers on the day, plus my number and a letter from me saying that I've agreed to the swap before 10am (race starts at 11am).
If that's okay, let me know and I'll bring everything along to training on Tuesday. If you're not planning on going down, we can sort something else out I'm sure. My home number is 830109.

Gwent X-Country League at Blaise Castle, anybody wishing to run please let me know as we can enter you prior to the race as Jan my wife is in change of registrations. 10 k for men 6k for the ladies. They usually only deal with team managers on the day. It's a good parkland course and not too hilly.

Derek, Look me up on Strava, I did the route last sunday morning and have the course mapped.
The woods bit is straight forward, start at the Kewstoke end by the "New Castle" inn. follow the long trail that goes straight up towards the water tower. Just before it comes out at the water tower, there is a cross roads. Turn right and follow the trail behind the water tower. Follow this trail until it joins the long downhill section that comes out by Birnbeck. Hope this makes sense?

Dont suppose anyone has the current tough ten as a Strava route do they?

I can see a shed load listed, but not with the date, and the ones I have checked seemed to be the old route?

If not the full route, I just wanted to check the bit out by the woods, never been that way, and not sure it will be obvious when I try and find it over the weekend.

Two Bays marshals 15/2/15
Hi all I mentioned a week or so ago that the race director for the Two Bays on the 15th Feb is looking for help to marshal the race.
Whilst this not a WAC race Mike is offering to make a payment of 20 to one of: Weston Hospicecare, Barton Camp or Diabetes UK for everybody that turns up to help. So if you are not running and fancy coming out to watch all of your teammates that are, help the race and raise some money for charity at the same time can you please email the race director and let him Know which charity you would like the payment made to.
Please contact Mike Buckland at racedirector@twobaystoughten.co.uk to let him know that you available to help
Cheers

Well done to all the brave runners who faced the very cold wind and rain to compete in last night's prom race. Hats off to those at the back half of the field who unfortunately caught the heavy sleet.

Most importantly a very big thank you to all those brave marshals and helpers on the finish line who had to endure such awful weather. You all got so cold and wet and yet a number of runners commented on how much they appreciated your enthusiastic support despite the conditions. Thank you very much for your amazing support without which these races would not be able to take place.

Bristol 10K and Half Marathon Entries
Just a quick reminder that the rules regarding the EA affiliation mean that as the Bristol events are UK licenced you cannot run as WAC if you are not affiliated. I am afraid that this means that you also cannot be part of the club reduced price entry.
If you are not already affiliated you will find that the 35% discount (if we get 20 runners) and saving the 3 card admin fee means you will save more on this one race than the annual affiliation cost

Hi All,
Brilliant turnout out on a cold Tuesday night in January.
Record 68 finishers (previous record 47) plus one dnf and 7 helpers makes 76 WAC people on the seafront.
First home in a new pb by 1:15 in a time of 24:17 was Julie Bailiss. Fastest run of the night also in a brilliant new p.b. of 16:40 was Chris Mcmillan.
I did not get given times by Katie Gormley, Marc Bostock, Andy Kelsey or Shaleen Summers. If you can give me your time or who you finished in front of or just behind that will help me to produce the results.
P.s. too many pb's to mention tonight but extremely well done to all
