I was most puzzled to see that our Social Manager is about to defy the laws of physics next month. At the 'Not Cracker' social run, he apparently will be cloning himself and running twice? At the same time? I guess its not only his better half who has been guzzling the sherry!

So we had gale force winds, a high tide, switching on of the town Xmas lights, our normal race registration room closed and a building site for a race course. Despite all of the things stacked up against us we still had 223 hardy runners (and almost as many race marshals) brave the conditions and complete the November Prom race. Well done to all the runners and a HUGE thankyou to everyone who helped with the organisation last night. I dont think a prom race has ever seen so many yellow marshals vests and the registration team did another great job in tight circumstances.

Thank you for taking the time in posting a message on this subject. Each of our training groups are watched over by endorsed coaches and they endeavour to oversee the safety and welfare of both the runners and other members of the public. This sometime requires runners to run along the sides of the road to avoid causing problems to other pedestrians using the pavement. During these occasions we pay extra attention to other road traffic so not to cause any additional issues to both us and the traffic. We will make sure that the comments you have raised are reported to appropriate people and relayed throughout the club.

I would like to thank everyone who has come forward already to volunteer to help with The Cracker race on 13th December 2009. This is the one race in the year when we ask all club members to help and no club members run (unless they carry out an extreme task in return!)
As you can imagine this year is going to be a challenge with all the sea defence work and we have a new course too, so we need as many volunteers as possible.
If you haven't yet contacted me, to 'volunteer', there are still many tasks that need to be carried out, just let me know the extent of your availability - All stripping tasks have now been taken, so don't be shy!

Adrian Noble is first back for the blokes in the Stagger, I was second back and I think Chris Dachtler was 3rd. Sarah Styles ran well, in fact everyone did good times in perfect running conditions. No official results posted yet.

Any news on Mr Washburn in the Abingdon Marathon?

As Prom Race Director and on behalf of the Prom Race Committee can I thank all those who helped at last nights race. The challenges we face with the ongoing sea front works coupled with the change of HQ location did not make for an easy to manage race and the support we received especially from the marshals along the sea front and the HQ team meant that we had a safe and enjoyable race. Thanks also to our IT team for getting the results out and published so quickly. Well done and only 5 weeks to the next one!.

Note for all Cyclists. Presidents Breakfast Run on Saturday. The meeting point for the cyclists is the normal time and venue for Saturday rides. Outside of the school entrance opposite Sainsbury's in Worle. Distance before breakfast will also be in line with the normal Saturday rides at around 30-35 miles. You then have a choice after breakfast to head for home or to continue as normal for the remainder of the ride.

This Saturday at 6pm the Ironman World Championship kicks off in Hawaii. Kit Stokes is racing ( number 1276 ) and should go well. The whole event is screened live on the Ironmanlive website. GB's very own Chrissie Wellington is hot favourite to win the womens event for a third time, possibly in a record time.
Starting at 6pm this could well result in a long night infront of the pc. There Victor, I've got my excuse in already for a poor show at the Muddle !

Thanks to everyone for helping out last night. The course was certainly more challenging than normal, but I'm sure it helped with more marshal's and of course our hairy cheerleaders down at the Tropicana. I'll put up next month's volunteer list nearer to the date. If anybody is not running it really helps if you can marshal/help in the Pavillion bar to free up people who do want to run.
p.s. Don't forget to volunteer for the Cracker, we've still got lots of slots to fill.

This weeks social is from the CROWN INN at Churchill (Just up the side road by the Nelsons Arms). I will be leading the run, as the Haywards are suffering from Man Flu and injuries, but following their planned route.

Can I ask that you are all ready for a PROMPT 7PM START as light is fading and fast and we have a steady, undulating, off road, 6m run to cover. A Head-torch or lightweight torch may be useful especially for inspecting the cakes?!

I am holding volunteer lists for 9 PROM RUNS, THE CRACKER, THE MENDIP MUDDLE AND THE HANGOVER.

PROM: We need 20 volunteers for each prom run. Some of the roles will enable you to also run the race. Some of the roles will need to be carried out during the race. We would like everyone in the club to volunteer to help on at least one race in the season. Anybody who is aiming to get a certificate by completing all the races will be awarded if they complete 8 races and act as a volunteer for a 9th race.We would like regular Prom Run helpers to also come forward, so that we know you are still available.

Cracker: This years Cracker is on 13th December. As in previous years, no members of the club are allowed to enter the race due to the numbers of volunteers required. Please could you let me know how you would like to volunteer, before, during, after, all day? I have also got last years list, so if you would like the same role as last year let me know. Any new members, just shout and I'll let you know the roles that need to be fulfilled on the day. (Be aware we only need 15 strippers and I have names on the list already, so be quick!!!)

Muddle: Bryan has been canvassing for volunteers for a few weeks, if anybody would still like to volunteer, you can let me know when responding for the above and I'll let Bryan know.

Hangover: Jim Wotton has started to look for help, if anybody would like to volunteer, you can let me know when responding for the above and I'll pass on your details direct to Jim.

Thank you very much for your support. This is a very busy time of year for our club races, your support is needed and very much appreciated. It is always easier if people come forward as it saves chasing around nearer to the race day.

Thank you

Hi Mars.... Think I got the gist of your message but a little hard as I think in some places you went into Polish or something. Ever since you confided in me that you didn't really have any friends I agreed that I would be you friend so don't try and kid me that you have anyone else to help you out, by the way that time I nearly knocked you off your bike was a genuine accident and nothing to do with the general abuse you give me. Anyway great news, we have plates, napkins and people are bringing their own forks/spoons.... so come on woman get baking......

Mars

Rob, i rather write on the message board rather than by e-mail as i might say something rude. i love my time cooking in the kitchen thats not the problem, i thought you were a freiend and friends normaly help out when there is a problem. so i will bring the napkins then. deal or no dealor do i need to contact a resl friend who can multi task and bake cakes.love from a friend in need. lets say no more about ok.

The route will be new and exciting to many of you with great scenery so you may want to bring a camera. Most importantly the cakes come from one of our annual prize winners and the judge himself so surely they must be great!

NEW RACE - Uphill to Wells Relay is a new 'hand-over' relay to be held on Saturday 12th September on the West Mendip Way from Uphill beach to Wells cathedral.

The 29 mile route is 90% off-road and is divided into six stages varying from 3 to 7 miles in length. Teams can be made up of from 1 to 6 runners who can run any combination of legs each. Stronger runners can therefore run multiple legs and less able runners can also take part.

All the details at www.uphilltowells.com, online entries open this Saturday 1st August.

Don't forget bleep test tonight 7pm Hutton Moor. 4.30 or free if your a HM member. Go to reception and ask for 'circuits'. Keep ticket to hand to instructor in the far side of main hall, and let her know you're 'new'. I'll be there, not going hard so can act as pacer if you like. Session is split into half bleep test and half circuit training. Don't worry - there will be a large mix of ability. Bring a drink!

Social Run from Swan Inn at Rowberrow 7 pm tomo. Some rumours going round that it's gonna be tough and you might need crash helmets. Ignore the nonsence - Paddy the dog and I have taken the greatest care in devising a flat, smooth, scratch and slip-free route, with the well-being of WAC runners at the forefront our minds throughout the carefull planning and creation of in-depth risk assesments. Better wear shoes with good tread and support and if you don't want scratched legs you'd better pop a pair of tights on though - just in case...

LEJOG. Well we are all home after making it safely to JOG. What an adventure, great company very hard cycling and absolutely amazing scenery. The weather was pretty crap especially in the final few days in Scotland but we at least had a dry day for the short 35 mile ride in to JOG. We never expected to keep up the pace as we did but even through the Scottish Lochs and Glens we were still working hard and keeping the average speed high. Scotland is a very beautiful place but full of nasty biting insects, strong winds and heavy rain. Great to meet up with Paul O,Dwyer just setting out and he is doing well reaching Pitlochry last night. No running for 2 weeks so may be a little rusty at training tonight.perhaps I can do it on the bike? Thanks for all the messages of support. See you all later.

Following the recent cancellation of Anna's visit to Hutton Moor, to provide sports massage, please note that a new date has been arranged, i.e. Tuesday 11th August. I'm conscious that a number of you who previously asked for a slot may be on holiday on this date. Can I please therefore ask you to confirm if you would still like a sports massage on the new date (11/8) and if you are happy to keep your original time-slots.

Many thanks

Hash - Sat 25th July. For all the new members who don't know what this is about a few words of explanation.
It's a social event based around a run and BBQ. For those that don't want to run there is a walk along the footpaths of East Brent and for those that don't want to walk then you can watch me set up the BBQ and enjoy a leisurly drink while waiting for the runners and walkers to return. The run is a trail marked with flour for you to follow, about 6 miles long. However there will be points on the run where there are several trails leading away from the same point, it will be up to you to find the correct trail, the false trials will terminate with a line of flour, you willl then need to go back to the original point to check another trial and so on. There will be several regrouping points, we haven't lost anybody yet!

If you are coming could you please let me know numbers so I have some idea of catering.

Caught up with Lejog yesterday (Thurs) via the M/Bike, 120 miles from W-s-M Joining them at a tea stop outside Shrewsbury, they all seem to be in good order, stuffing themselves with cakes, tea, biscuits and chocs as it was Phil Hemming's 58th birthday (ex WAC member)at all the stops. I hear it's Ian's big 60th next thursday, but I'm not going that far up-country! They have had a broken crank on one of the new bikes so had it replaced in Hereford. Dave Trowbridge was the culprit so they left him to cycle with the three tandems at the back and ten miles behind the main groups as a punishment.

Lead up to race was "interesting", hire car broke down, replacement hire car was towed away, then I nearly got arrested for reversing over a man in wheelchair - some people have no sense of humour !

LEJOG UPDATE. ..Apologies for the delay in updating but I left my mobile phone at home. 3 days riding now completed and 200+ miles covered cycling from Lands End to Weston. Overnight stop in our own beds tonight will be bliss after 3 nights under canvas and unpleasant weather. No major problems on route except a few punctures. The caped crusader has appeared twice and no doubt photos will follow. I did not realise just how many hills there are in Cornwall and Devon but the views were exceptional during the first two days of riding. Current speed record has been recorded at 50.1 MPH down one of the Devon Hills. Even Pete T clocked 48+MPH!! We start at 08.45 tomorrow morning from the Woolpack in St Georges. Now I have my mobile we will try and keep you all updated on progress. Looks like Charmouth went well and a good set of results so well done all. See you all soon .

Hi All

Sorry for direct post on your site.

Some of you will know me, I have been a top level runner for a few years, and until recently regularly took part in (occasionally winning) the Prom runs.
I am a sports massage therapist, I have a treatment room at Easy Runner in Bristol and work with a lot of runners on injury prevention, regular sports massage and also work with lots of folks who just want to relieve the stresses and strains of their work and running life.
I am starting a new clinic on Mon and Tues evenings in Worle High street.

She will be here again on Tuesday 21st July between 18.00 and 21.00 in the creche at Hutton Moor. So any members interested please let me know if you want to have this free sports massage. Fear not, if you are disappointed by Gerry's message that WAC can't get a team together. Wells is desperate for a few more keen runners expecially for legs 1 and 2 (long and hilly) and leg 6 ( shorter but v hilly!), If anyone would like to run a leg, check the Bath website for route info. It's on Sat 27 June, 10 runners in a relay along the 104 mile path. Fab scenery. Wells has entered three teams and would love to be able to fill them. Please email me if you are interested/would like more info.

New method
New ingrediants

Clearly the "old guard" feel threatened by the new bakers on the block?

In fact while i am ranting, why don't you Gerry and Rhino come for a demonstration, let me know when you are not eating at a fish and chip shop and i will gladly help :-)

Apparently Tubs Mchenry has not entered into the spirit of things and has been training (cheating). His muffins at the weekend were described as inedible ,and resembled concrete pancakes. Prom Series 2009/10 .... Your Club Needs You!!

Please be advised that a meeting will be held on Tuesday 2nd June (8.30pm in the bar at Hutton Moor), to discuss next year's Prom series. Any members / family or friends who would like to volunteer to form part of the Prom Committee, or help out on race nights, are more than welcome to attend tomorrow evening's meeting (the more the merrier!!)

It is proposed that by forming a Prom Committee to coordinate the series, this will spread the organisational workload across a team of people, rather than it falling to 2-3 individuals.

Henry Gordon Clark [Exmoor 30:30 (non-profit making company limited by guarantee] E-mail Henry Gordon Clark

Posted : 17:58
Hello All

My name is Henry and I am organising a new event called Exmoor 30:30 which we plan holding on the first Saturday in October each year. (October 3rd for this inaugural year.)

The event requires teams of 5 to carry 30lbs around 30miles of Exmoor (ie 150lbs in total). Each team must support one of the following 4 charities:

- Royal British Legion
- St John Ambulance
- Army Benevolent Fund
- Help For Heroes

It is basically an event being run by soldiers for soldiers. We are expecting teams of serving soldiers to enter and I hope you don't mind me using your club forum to see whether there might be any interest either in Weston AC entering a team or a member raising a team with non-member friends.

It is not a men-only event. The requirement is for each team to carry 150lbs at all times in total...clearly this means that the weight can be spread around between the team's 'monsters' and those with a slighter build. (In my experience, it is often the women who will make the best navigation decision in a pea-souper after 25 miles.)

The event is attracting widespread senior support from within the military, it will be well managed and it will be good fun (I promise). Free meal for all competitors at the prizegiving on the Saturday evening.

More details at www.exmoor3030.org.uk .

Many thanks for allowing me to mention the event on your site.

***Charmouth Weekend July 3rd,4th,5th***
I've telephoned Manor Farm campsite in Charmouth and they have allocated us the same field as last year. We have the field from Friday morning onwards so campers can come and go as they please. The campsite do not need individual phone calls, they are happy that we just turn up and pay when we are there for our own set up's. Prices per night this year are 15 for a car, tent/camper/caravan and 2 adults, extra 3 for electric.
I have made a request that the toilet block in that field is open and suggested that if they open it and leave us mops/buckets etc, we'll muck in!!! Feel free to shout me if you have any q's.

RACE FOR LIFE........ Sunday 17th May
Set up team to meet at 8.00am outside the Tropicana. The more helpers the easier it is.
Can anyone help with marshalling as we are still short of volunteers. Please can you turn up at 10am on the beach by the start line. If you could also let me know by email it would help. I will attach one of our yellow flags to my truck so you can find me easily. All marshals need to sign in as official helpers for Race For Life. 3500 entries as of last Sunday so we really do need at least 20 willing helpers.

I have arranged for her to attend our training night on Tuesday 9th June between 18.00 and 22.00 in the creche at Hutton Moor. Anyone interested in taking up this opportunity of a sports massage please let Ian or myself know asap and we will sort out the timetable.

A plea to all WAC members......Our next Prom Run is on May 21st. If you are not running and are able to help on the night this will be very much appreciated. The prom renovation works is well under way and whilst we still have access the width is very much restricted and there are likely to be a lot of members of the public around especially if the weather is good. We will therefore need as many helpers as possible to marshall the route and keep everyone safe. So please come along and help Rachael and Liz on the final prom of the series.

You claimed in last weeks mercury that you had given up team sports 10 years ago? But your influence at Worle FC is clearly still there.
Last week your old team Worle RESERVES got to a local cup final. In all the rounds leading up to this Jake Hannam played culminating in a man of the match
performance in the semi final. But come the final he is mysteriously left on the bench till the last 10 minutes, when Worle were 3-0 down!
That concludes the evidence for the prosecution.

WAC entered a team for this race for the first time last year and we plan to do so again. This year's race is on Saturday 27th June. We need 10 runners (male or female) plus a couple of reserves in case of injury or illness (last year we had 2 stages uncovered which added a lot to our overall time). Stages range from around 6 to 13 miles and are all scenic, fun and largely off-road following the length of the Cotswold Way. The club will pay the entry fee and team members then link together to co-ordinate transport etc. There is no pressure to do well, so if you are interested in taking part please let me know. Full details can be found on the race website (cotswoldwayrelay). Thanks, Gerry

PROM RUN.

As many of you know the work load for the Prom Run series was to great for Liz & Rachel to cope with given that they both have full time jobs to hold down. With this in mind we believe the way forward is to have a committee run the series to ensure that there is always cover and that no person has to feel committed to organise all nine races. Last night at the AGM we already had a number of people express interest in helping out but we need more willing and able volunteers. If you would be interested then please let me know so that we can develop this idea and hopefully have a meeting over the coming weeks to discuss the way forward.

Many thanks

The published calendar includes the popular Strawberry Line Run, including a run and family BBQ at Yatton Rugby Club. It has come to light today that some of you are running/walking the Mendip Way on the same day. So to try and avoid any disappointment I am looking at moving the Strawberry Line date - but this has to be done quickly for the rugby club booking. So having checked the championship, and the events list the 24 May or 19 July look possible without compromising other races/events. I shall investigate this with Adrian and Yatton RC. Call for help!!

Firstly congratulations to Liz & Rachel for doing such a grand job on the prom series. Sadly due to work commitments Liz & Rachel are have to step down and therefore the club will need ENCOURAGE one, two or more people to come forward and take over the race series. There are still a couple of races to be run this season so, if interested, people can pop along and see whats entailed before committing.

It would be a great shame to loose these races for good so please if there is anyone interested in putting something back into the club let me, or a member of the committee know.

Thank you

Rob

Whats the best way of making new trainers look old?
Answer
In true Phil (Bird) style projectile vomit all over them as you cross the finish line!

At least she got a pb for her efforts, not so great for the rest of us behind who skidded into it as we finished!!!

I wonder if anyone could help me here? I am trying to track down Tobias Hinchcliffe, who gave up his race at the Hogweed Hilly Half last week to help an elderly lady in the village,( the parish priest in fact) who had fallen and broken her wrist. I know that all at the Hogweed trotters were full of admiration for what he did, it was an act of spontaneous/generous behaviour that does not happen nearly enough. I have been asked by Pauline Green, the lady, concerned to pass on her grateful thanks to Tobias, I have also had a request from the St Johns ambulance for his contact details, if anyone can help me I would be very grateful.
Cheers Will Gray

Hardly anything trainer-wise, but some good mens and womens running tops (Hilly, Brookes etc), and even some 30quid leggings advertised for a fiver (double check that tho cos these things can be misleading).
If you need new running socks then there's a good range there but again - better make sure that they actually are half price!

Whilst I agree with both of my learned colleagues that the issue of extortionate online race entry fees is a pressing issue facing the great British public today, I feel that once again the real issue has been forgotten.

It is an outrage that this message board must proceed without the ability to accurately render the pound sign when expressing figures of a monetary nature. It is yet another example of the falling standards to which this government adheres and yet again demonstrates this countries slide into mediocrity under the current regime.

George Osborne (MP) [House of Commons AC]

For once Gordon we are of the same opinion. Such a shame I cannot hurl abuse to you across the despatch box. May I remind the House that Runner's World charges only 1.50 to process race applications electronically. For the Bristol Half to charge 3 is indeed daylight robbery and merely profiteering at the expense of the Great British public. I understand from my learned friend John Penrose (MP), member for Weston-super-Mare, that the local running club are up in arms at such an abuse and are threatening to withold their custom.

Gordon Brown [MP]

In the current financial climate, I must recommend fiscal prudence

Enter Bristol Half Marathon via post and save the ridiculous 3 "booking fee" that online entries attract.

Entry forms can be downloaded from the Bristol half site, its bad enough that it costs 28 to enter anyway...but 3 to use your own electricity to apply is just taking the ...

You pay an extra 5 to be UKA affiliated to allow you to claim reduced entry at UKA permitted races. Thats why they now ask for competiton licences on some application forms.

So you can still be attached to a club but not (in theory) be able to claim a reduced fee unless you have paid for a licence.

However to confuse maters many races are now run under ARC permits, which as a member of WAC you are automatically affiliated to this body.

Im sure that all reads as clear as mud!!

Hi everyone, I am managing a social event at the AMF bowling alley on 27 March. All are welcome, with partners, but I need to know firm numbers by Thursday 5th March ( and ideally 5 deposit pp ). Total cost is 15, for 2 games, including 2 beers ( or equivalent ) and an American sharing platter ( some sort of food with fries I suppose ). If you are interested let me know as soon as possible. Yes sure did payed 25.00 and not ran once with the club this term or enter a race or obtain a training top. Can i have a refund please so i can buy rich 25x 99p Hamburgers the 25p change can go to a charity of his choice or his next Weight watchers meeting. See the problem is the words fit healthy & young dont relate to me anymore. Think this years 25 will be best spent on nappies.
One day me and my fellow fatboy will return for a prom race and no doubt Rich will want to run one with a curry after it.

Lets be honest Derek, young Jake has inherited some fine athletic genes. But they come from the lovely Michelle. NOT YOU.

And to be fair to Victor. I'd like to see a straight mile race between the two of you. If Victor was to piggy back Geraldine for the whole race he would still be odds on fav!

Those who regularly run to Crook Peak and beyond on a Sunday morning will have to take your own water supply in future. The owner of Loxton Garage was waiting for us yesterday and politly asked if we would stop using his water tap and "toilet" facilities as he is on a water meter. It would appear someone has been leaving the tap running for long periods. I did assure him it was not anyone from WAC.

Sadly can't give results for the photo quiz as the prizes went missing, so did the table lists, however, if you can remember what you saw through the haze of alchohol, here's what they really were:

2 Centre of car steering wheel
3 Pencil Sharpener
4 Nail clippers
5 Cigarette lighter
6 Car cigarette lighter
7 Key
8 1 coin
9 Light switch
10 My ear
11 My cheek
12 Poopy seed cheese biscuit
13 Milky way bar
14 Candle
15 Balloon whisk
16 Hoover washing machine
17 Electric fire guard
18 Mobile phone keypad
19 Tea strainer
20 Garlic press

We're in big trouble otherwise!!

I thought I should post this for all in the club to see how the hard work of the Cracker Committee and all those club members who help on the day is appreciated:

Hi Rob

I am sorry for the delay in thanking you for Weston AC's generous gift to Weston Hospicecare generated from the Christmas Cracker. As I said on the day 4,000 is a huge amount of money and on behalf of the patients that we serve thank you so very much. To give you an idea on where the money could go I have outlined a couple of approximate costings.
A weeks episode in the In-Patient Unit involving the Clinical Team and with all the support costs around 2,500. Maintaining the equipment eg hoists, beds, bathrooms, boilers and heating exceeds 1,000 each month.
The Christmas Cracker is such a fun and well organised event and plays a big part in our fundraising calendar. Having put on events myself I do appreciate how much hard work and good will is put into the event and do please pass on my thanks to all those involved.
I also thought you would be interested to learn how much the event has raised over the years (including Gift Aid)

2004 = 10,836
2005 = 7,170
2006 = 9,901
2007 = 13,422
and so far for 2008 5,572

Once again many many thanks Rob
kind regards
Penny

To all of you on the crooks peak run today, as a "first timer" it was a great run, thanks for the support great morning. Luckily my back ground as a swimmer really helped in the last few miles and I am now confident in my ability to Ski this season based on some of the slippy descents.......

Can recommend the Sunday run's from Swan to anyone. The route offers individuals the option to cut back at various points or stay the distance and be entertained by Victor ! The pace is steady and the terrain excellent for those looking to improve their running. Give it a go !

The tights will be on show again this sunday 8.30 The Swan, Rowberrow. Proved very popular last week with a group of 8, so don't be shy aiming to do 2 hr loop to Charterhouse but will tailor route to suit group abilities .

Sean , there is big and there is morbidly obese i think Del is falling into latter category. Just checked Prom times and noticed you were lagging behind Ian, Phil and Ger think more speedwork is needed.

Victor, I have a big backer paying for all my entries, we have worked out that lack of speed does not necessarily mean "Barry hotles" can be won by an old, grey water polo player.

Can money buy you glory?

Somerset County Council is considering a proposal to axe the Mendips Hill Warden Service, making Les and Tina redundant. They were very helpful in setting up the Mendip Muddle, and they have worked hard over the years to help keep the Mendips a great place to run. If you care about this, please sign the online petition you can find by Googling "sows-on-Mendip" - immediately, the decision is imminent.

You are right Mr Bond. My personal trainer came highly recommended by Dwain Chambers himself. Apparently, he's now so skint he's been touted as playing Smee in Peter Pan at the Playhouse next year with Marion Jones starring as Tinkerbell. Timmy Mallet's hopes of a second successive year in Weston's premier entertainment venue look to be in doubt.

To all WAC and other helpers at todays Hangover. Sincere thanks for your help and support (again!) especially on such a cold day. It makes it so much easier when people do not only the job that I ask them to but also the many other jobs that they see need doing. That is why we have such a strong organisation team now.

I have already had one or two thank you messages to pass on to the marshals from other runners

Thanks again Jim
